Burger Vans

Always tended to turn my nose up a little at roadside Burger Vans but after a few positive experiences I think they are a bit of an unsung hero of the British motoring landscape.

Same as when at any motorsport gathering, the smell is not complete without fried onions wafting across.

Let us celebrate this Institution, your best burger vans and stories please.

Can't say I've ever found a decent one, although I have stopped looking - always seem to have the cheapest possible burgers fried to death, slapped in a crappy bun. For me I want some real animal, a slice of decent cheese, decent bread and the option of bacon or guacamole.

My missus bit into a hot dog we bought from a burger van at Brands Hatch. The sausage had a blue plaster in the middle!

One of my close friends owns/runs a burger wagon (Layby just off Junction 2 of the M50)
I always eat there when I am going past as it is good food, or just pop up on a Saturday morning for a roll and cuppa T. All local produce including bacon, beef, free range eggs etc... and fresh bread from local bakery every day. Always busy and supplies local companies.
Proper nice bacon and egg rolls nom nom..

There are ones that use the bulk boxed 1% meat burgers and cook hundreds up and leave them to the side till ordered.. dislike these ones as its like eating cardboard in a stale bread bun. Usually found at bigger events and charge £5+ for a burger

You need to be drunk, or else they don't taste right. Something to do with requiring significantly impared judgement.

The burgers at Silverstone never did anything for me until I camped there for MotoGP. 3 cans drunk is about perfect for not noticing they are horrible while still be able to order one without slurring.

I used to spend a lot of time on the road and had ear-marked all the decent ones - I remember a particularly good one many years ago near Mansfield run by a lovely lady who made her own burgers - even minced the beef coarsely herself, they were excellent. Another was a van that attended off-road days and did a 'full-english' burger. Huge bap with a massive burger on topped with bacon, sausage, egg, beans, mushrooms and a slice of black pud.

Can't help feeling this will be moved to the food bit ASAP.

I was thinkign it was related to motoring, more than food, i.e. where you stop when out for a drive, this section being more for people to share recipes !

The MSVR catering at Oulton Park isn't half bad - a bit pricey but decent.

Palmer apparently samples the wares at his circuits and he has ejected a vendor from Oulton in the past, he had subcontracted the main catering but has brought it back in house..

if your heading upowards diss on the a140, a couple of miles before you get there, on the right is "roy humphries", transport, rental, warehousing, etc, etc, its a huge site, yu won't miss it. just outside the security gate is a snack wagon, and its cracking
there used to be loads, but like proper old truckers caffs, they seem to be abit of a dying breed

Used to occassionally "treat" myself to the mega-heart-attack burger from there when I worked at Comet - so well over a decade ago. Double burger, fried egg, bacon, sausage, onions and whatever else could squeeze in between the straining buns.

Agree with you on MSV catering.
But the best (IMHO) food at a UK circuit is at Mallory Park.

WRT roadside burger vans I just look for the busy ones, figuring that if they are good they will be busy.

There used to be a great one outside South Wales Superbikes in Newport. Not sure if it goes there any more.

There used to be a mock Tudor truckstop on the A57 near Retford. Proper full English with a bottomless mug of tea for three quid. Proper grub
