Reccomend me a digital oven thermometer
Discussion
Hello chaps and chapesses,
I'm after a decent oven/meat thermometer upon which you can enter a prong onto the meat and set an alert once it has reached a certain temperature.
I've found this, the polder programmable thermometer - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Polder-Progr...I3PMWZZQFMV...
But the reviews are quite mixed on the us amazon.
Can anyone reccomend a good device?
Thanks all.

After further research I've settled on the following - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003ARNMD2/ref=...
Looks to be the most decent one I can find, just remains to be tested on next weeks roast.

That's the exact model I have, with a dead probe.I've had several cheap digital ones over the years but they all broke pretty easily so last year I invested in one of these:

Expensive maybe (about £100 with suitable probe), but very well made and you can use a variety of different probes with it which are easy to replace or repair if a wire gets cut or the probe is damaged.

Problem with that is that the probe can't be left in the meat with the oven door shut.
The probe shown in the photo is just an example. You buy the probes separately to the hand held bit and there are loads of different probes you can get. I've got the one shown in the photo and also another one which is suitable for leaving in the meat while it is in the oven.
The thermometers I bought before (same as the ones you see on Amazon and cookshops) suffered from two problems IMO:
1. They're cheaply made in China and the electronics are as good or bad as any other cheap device these days, so you may get one that lasts for years or you may buy a succession of them that keep going wrong.
I think I had a couple where the probes failed but I also had a couple where the main unit packed up or the connector the probe plugged into (usually a cheap mini jack plug/socket) failed.
2. They usually come as a set with the probes not being sold separately. The last one I bought was the only one I could find which also offered spare probes, but they were never in stock so when that one failed I just decided to kick the cheapo thermometers into touch and buy an 'industrial' one.
I should add that I do also have requirements in my work and other hobbies for an accurate thermometer, so it wasn't just bought for cooking, so I do understand anyone who might think £100 is a bit excessive for an oven thermometer!
However, it's very well designed and built, is very accurate and has a fast response time, so I wouldn't be without it now.

I got a Heston Bluminthal branded one as a Christmas present last year, not used it in the oven all that much but it is useful on the occasions I have to be able to monitor the temperature when slow cooking something

This one is good at £60. It's designed for the BBQ so it's got two probes, one for the internal meat temp and one for the fire.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maverick-Wireless-BBQ-Ther...
It's also wireless so you can take the read out with you when you're away from the BBQ. It also has warnings for:
- BBQ too hot
- BBQ too cold
- Meat reached desired temp
Can't fault it really.

I have one of these and it's great

I believe they also now do a digital one which is about £25 in John Lewis
