Looking to do a Hog Roast this year, catering for up to 200 people.
It would be good to do it myself, but knowing my normal culinary skills that could be a disaster.
So, anybody have any experience they'd like to share?
Hire a machine or make a spit myself? What size porker do I need?
Its going to be in France as well, which might complicate things a little....

Here's the thing you need. They're only charging USD 99 for shipping at the moment too.

Our wedding caterer quoted £11 per person for hog roast - minimum of 100 people.
Including condiments / stuffing / apple sauce yada yada.
Seemed a bit pricey to me.
Well here is a link to a dead pig http://www.meatpacks.co.uk/SpecialOrders/SpecialOr... so you know the price of that. Including condiments / stuffing / apple sauce yada yada.

I can give you a code to get 20% off too.

Currently designing the spit with autocad

Having done both ie made a spit and borrowed a gas burner jobie, the spit won out,way better taste, used apple wood, sense of occaision etc,yes time is way longer but with the weather in France it won't be a fag getting up earlier and if you got a car battery and wiper motor you could motorize it so that you wouldn't have to turn it.
The spit made for a way way better occaision all in all, sipping beer and gassing by the pig made for a party in its self

do you want stuffing? And a roll?
We went to the Cowbridge food festival a few months ago. There was loads of fantastic food stalls selling everything you can imagine.
I went to the hog roast stall.
Three times.

I've done quite a few hog roasts for 100-200 people using hired kit. It's not difficult really but the practicalities of cooking two pigs mean you will have a very busy day yourself. Personally if you've not catered for large numbers before I'd just hire someone in to do it for you.
Exactly - do you want to be a chef or have a good day with your mates.Your enjoyment of the day will far outweigh the cost of having someone cook it for you
