I love a decent bit of beef and I'm alwsys on the lookout for interesting ways to enjoy it... A few of my discoveries:

Ox cheek. Beautiful flavour, makes great stews & curries

Jacob's ladder: slow cooked and served with BBQ sauce (homemade)

Beef skirt: tenderised with a hammer and made in to bavette.

So what have you got??

Now I like the sound of that!

This arvo I'm cooking an ox heart curry. Onions fried in dripping, obviously...

Shin of beef.

Wonderful stuff slow cooked. The missus made the most phenomenal chilli con carne yesterday. In the slow cooker with shin of beef. Wow.

Shin is delicious. If you like that Don, try to get some clod from the butcher. It's another slow cook winner.

Some of the tastiest beef cuts are the cheapest too...

yes Bar far the tastiest piece of the animal.

My second nomination would be for Oxtail, cooked Boerekos style.

Yes to the above, plus an aged forerib, blasted for 20 mins then cooked gently to an internal temp of 56c. Beautiful!

Oxtail is indeed great... Tell us more about boerekos...

I guess you're a saffa? I am borderline addicted to biltong...

I'm a classic soutie to quote the Afrikaans side of my (wife's) family - but am very taken with the culture and the cuisine (I make my own biltong).

Boerekos literally translated means farmers food; but it's really a state of mind. Hearty food, a good mixture of meats and vegetables...and strangely often served with multiple starches (so potatoes and rice), but cooked and eaten in a very social and family oriented way. Think British Sunday roast, but for most meals.

The best oxtail I have ever eaten was cooked by my Father-in-law and I in a potkjie (a traditional cast iron cooking pot) over a wood fire. We prepped veg - carrots, potatoes, squash, onions and aromatics. Layered these with oxtail, topped up with stock and a large glug of red wine (I'm pretty sure some brandy went in there too) and left it for about 3-4 hours. The result was the most unctuous stew, served under a canopy of stars and washed down with ice cold beer.

A very memorable meal!

Brisket. I'm doing a pot roast today. Cooked with onions, carrots & parsnips and served with Yorkshires and roasters.

Stovies tomorrow!
