I'm picking up a bottle of zinfandel (eugh, seriously, I'm sick of drinking this st now) for the girl I'm seeing as I'm cooking her a rather classy meal of pasta. I've told her it's wholewheat though 'cos I'm not a simple carbs kinda guy.

I love whiskey taste but not neat. I'm not middle-aged... YET! So I prefer it mixed. However, as mentioned above, I'd rather avoid my simple carbs so I want something better (read: less full of st) than coca-cola.

What is a good compliment for a bourbon? I am thinking of picking up the honey infused bottle I've seen advertised.

Thank you gents.

Soda water.

Every time. Don't want to ruin the flavour, do you?

In my (foolish) youth it was always coca cola, when I matured a bit it was ginger ale. Now that I am much wiser it's either neat or a good single malt instead.

Ginger! Sounds like a winner.

Canadian Ginger Ale stuff yeah?

Is that honey infused stuff any good? JD or Jim Beam.

I like bourbon with a lot of ice - probably sacrilege I know, but takes the edge off drinking pure spirit and makes it last. 0 calories too!

One of my favourite drinks is an old fashioned, but again doesn't really have a mixer, just a whiff or orange with sugar syrup/bitters.

I remember a drink from a few years back when I used to go to Old Orleans a lot which involved bourbon and cream (possibly ammaretto too), but probably not what you're after if you're feelign diet conscious!

Canada dry, anything not too strong or sweet. Try to add as little as possible.

You've got to try an Old Fashioned... Very simple but delicious cocktail:

make a manhattan, the king of cocktails.

whisky, a little vermouth, dash of bitters and stirred with ice. takes seconds and leaves no mess.

That. Take a look at the amount of calories in a shot of bourbon - that's where your problem is if you're looking at carbs.

Fever Tree ginger beer or ale depending on your preference, mine is beer. Lovely stuff, goes well with rum too.

Bourbon and apple juice is an absolute revelation. Once you’ve tried it, you’ll never go back.

As above, ginger ale with a chunk of lime.
