So, a lady friend gave me a durian as a gesture of peace. Wikipedia suggests opinions vary from it being:

A rich custard highly flavoured with almonds gives the best general idea of it, but there are occasional wafts of flavour that call to mind cream-cheese, onion-sauce, sherry-wine, and other incongruous dishes. Then there is a rich glutinous smoothness in the pulp which nothing else possesses, but which adds to its delicacy. It is neither acid nor sweet nor juicy; yet it wants neither of these qualities, for it is in itself perfect

to:

... its odor is best described as pig-st, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia

I've already pricked my hands on it and am wondering if it is more of a trojan than a peace offering.

Anyone had any durian experiences and offer any advice?

Ahh Durian, the king of fruits, loved across south east Asia as a delicacy, banned from public buildings / transport in Singapore because of the smell ($1000 fine if caught)

f%$%*( foul thing, do as above, bin it .... In someone else bin, preferably in another town otherwise you will have a stench like a mixture of rotting corpse, old socks and broken gas main, and it will impregnate everything.

its bloody awfull.
iv tried a lot of exotic food and durian is the most disgusting "food" iv ever tasted.

it smells like rotten socks and tastes the same, how its claimed to be an aphrodisiac i'l never know.

the only other thing that gave me the instant heaves and gag reflex is pandanis (pandan) but durian is much worse.

Apparently it's an aphrodisiac, there being some southeast Asian saying along the lines of "When the durian comes down, the sarongs go up."

Yeah, right.

Not knowing what they were (but thinking they looked 'interesting'), I bought a bag of Durian-flavoured crisps from an Oriental food market in Wellington, NZ.

I left the bag in the kitchen along with some other groceries, and went out again.

When I got back, "WTF is that smell?" The whole house stank of what I can only describe as a cross between diarrhoea (sp?), sweaty armpits and cheesy feet. I hadn't even opened the bag. redface

It went in the bin, and all windows were flung open, even in the depths of a Wellington winter.

What the fruit itself is like, I can't imagine.

Everything's horrible about them. They look like a virus observed through a microscope, they take 10 minutes to get into unless you happen to carry a jungle-spec machete in your utensils drawer, they smell like death, the texture is basically baby sick and after all that effort and suffering in the hope of some reward the flavour is almost exactly what I expect a tramp's taint tastes like after 5 hours of jogging in the summer.

If someone gave me Durian as a gesture of peace, I'd ram it up their arse and hope they got the irony.

Other than that they're lovely.

I love Durian! Very creamy and has a lovely aroma.

Bloody expensive in the UK so don't waste it.

I love the stuff. Loads of it here in Thailand, and I don't really see what all the fuss is about.

The smell is strong in a soft cheese kind of way, but not obnoxious, the taste and consistency of it make it enjoyable. That said, I'm not sure how it would be by the time it was shipped over to the UK.

I love Durian, and esp dried Durian chips! smells awful but tastes lovely - but then I love cheese, and to people with weak palates, the thought of a bit of Roquefort is rank.

type durian into youtube. Personally I think you should film yourself eating it.

Locals here go mad for it here (singapore) but not really my cup of tea. Jack Fruit however is pretty good.

I tried a Durian flavoured sweet once as I thought it would be a good 'intro' before trying the real thing. Utterly foul, spat it out almost immediately. Bin it or give it to someone you don't like as a gesture of peace.
