Food in NYC

PH Foodies,

I didn't know which forum this should go in, but as there are more eaters here thank in the travel section thought it best. Off to NYC next week, and i would really like to sample some of the good stuff...not completely Man Vs Food style but a bit of everything. I have been before so Katz (i am sure there is better) and places like that will be revisited, but does anyone have any really top tips for a great pie, sushi, wings, soul, burgers, dawgs etc?

I did find this link Man vs Food which shows all the locations he did his challenges at across America, but it may be old and some of the stuff looks more like quantity>quality situations, so basically where have you eaten that was really epic?

Lombardi's Pizzeria is fantastic. I'm going in June and been to Katz's also but this year I'm doing a Man Vs Food tour so looking forward to that.

A little bit of the MvF style places but its really the good atmosphere i would like to experience...the NYC style so to speak. Have done Katz and Bagatelle and Soho House (only been to NYC once for 4 days) and so kind of covered the full spectrum. Went to a Patsy's which was a good pizza but i am sure there is better, as i am sure that there is a better diner than Katz etc...

So the experiences i am looking for is sampling the best NYC has to offer, for instance fancy a few beers and good wings or a couple of slices of the good stuff, but also to be able to hit the night life well with some hidden gems.

Basically i don't know what i want...just some great food spread across the spectrum on MnF and high end! Any help and previous experiences would be great. A place where if someone visited they MUST go to. i have rambled a bit her...sorry about that

You must go see the guys at morning star cafe! There pancakes and breakfasts are amazing, I would recommend a large stack with strawberrys and maple syrup a side of chocolate ice cream and a coffee.

Daisey Mae's ain't high falootin' place. Order at the counter, eat in the communal dining room on PVC table cloths while admiring the Jack Daniel's BBQ championship awards and eating great, great BBQ.

I've been a regular visitor to NYC over the years and these are on my 'must' list for my next visit in June:

Stanton Social - Lots of interesting small plates. Especially good for Sunday Brunch:

K-Town (Korea Town) around the Empire state is great fun for Korean BBQ and 'secret' bars if that's your sort of thing.

Cocktails + food is the trendy thing in NY right now, i would make sure you visit:

Saxon+Parole (East Village, bar with good food. My favorite lunch spot.)
Beauty & Essex (LES, bar with good food. very trendy.)
The Beagle (East Village, bar with good food. Plus the guy makes & sells his own tonic water)
Empellon Taqeria (West Village, high-end Mexican, tequila cocktails)
Sushi of Gari (multiple locations, i like the TriBeCa one. The best sushi i've had outside of Japan)
Mile End Deli (east village) is Kat'z but modern and without all the tourists. Portion sizes are more sensible, too.

all the bars are good nightlife spots as well, of course.

Williamsburg, Brooklyn is one of the best places to eat and drink these days and one subway stop over the river.

Maison Premier (Williamsburg, 1920s style absinthe, gin and oyster bar)
Hotel Delmano (Williamsburg, same as above and just as cool)
The Shanty (Williamsburg, its a cocktail bar inside a gin distillery)
Mast Brothers Chocolate (Williamsburg, its a chocolate factory worth visiting)

some cheap eats too:

Xi'an Famous Foods - amazing Xinjiang style spicy noodles for $5 on St.Marks Place (East Village)
Crif Dogs - iconic hotdog place on St Marks Place. Also has speakeasy bar behind the phone booth.

Of the aforementioned I give a thumbs up to The Smith and Criff Dogs.

I'd recommend you check out the Grand Central Oyster Bar.

Shakeshack for burgers. Rated as one of the top ten restaurants in the USA according to an article I read. They do the best 'fast food' burger I've ever tasted. I think there are 3 or 4 of them dotted around the city.

Carnegie Deli is famous for pastrami and corned beef sandwiches, authentic new York Jewish deli.

Next door is Brooklyn Brewery. Great lager, nice IPA, and on a Sunday they open up the brewery hall for socialising, drinking and bringing your own chow. It's cool.

Meanwhile, a word of warning. Do not attempt curry in NYC (or indeed anywhere in the US).

Unless you like it with frozen diced vegetables and stock cubes in.

Of course, if you're in that neighborhood and want fried chicken then Pies n Thighs is just down the road....and is even better chicken

For burgers - hands down it has to be Shake Shack- I can stil taste it now and it was worth the 30 minute wait in line....

A little touristy but Grimaldi's pizza is very very good. Walk across a the Brooklyn Bridge- eat a at Grimaldi's and then take the Water Taxi back to Manhattan.

For desert check out Max Brenner- was always busy and realy liked the deserts

We had a very good brunch at Locande Verde - make sure you book beforehand though..

I'm heading back Stateside in a week or two through until Mid July - Absolutely going to have to give the Sunday brewery hall thing a go. That sounds great!
