Has anyone tried THAT coffee? (Kopi Luwak)

Kopi Luwak - the coffee made from the beans that have been through the digestive system of a civet cat from start to finish - anyone tried it?

I'm intrigued to know if it's any good.

Yes. Tried it in Bali. Very nice, but I believe very expensive over here.

Yep, got some a leaving pressie from a previous job, it's a slighly unusual taste, but quite tasty, with a bit of a nutty aftertaste.

I tried it in Indonesia and it tasted like ... coffee.

Then somebody I know sent me some beans through the post but they were unroasted. It was in the days before the internet so finding out how to roast your own, in the oven at home was a bit hit and miss. That coffee ended up tasting a bit burned.

More recently Betty's of Harrogate had a bit of a go with it but again it just tasted like coffee to me. Maybe it's a connoisseur thing.

I do have a sneaking suspicion that it doesn't taste any better than a good coffee that hasn't been pooed out by a cat, but that it's something for (slightly pretentious) people with plenty of £ in need of things to spend it on.

A pretty good summary I think. It does taste different, and it does taste very nice, however I wouldn't say it tastes better than a decent coffee at a fraction of the price. It did however come in a nice wooden presentation box with a lump of poo encased in resin as a paperweight

The theory is the civits only eath the freshest cherries from the top of the tree, as well as the thing about stomach acids fermenting the beans, but I've heard it claimed that a lot of it now is from captive civit cats that are fed coffee cherries that picked by humans as they know they can make loads of money from it.

Vietnamese coffee is worth a go if you haven't tried it. I'm on my first ever tin.... Sweet and slightly chocolately.

The Civet stuff could be interesting. I've yet to try it.

Not sure if you're talking about the same thing, but I was in a Vietnamese restaurant a couple of weeks back. First time I'd tried Vietnamese coffee - you are served with a glass which contains a layer of condensed milk at the bottom, and a metal filter sits on top of the glass.

Rich tasting stuff, kinda dark chocolatey. I stirred in the condensed milk when the coffee had poured - ended up being VERY sweet.

My girlfriend, who has spent a bit of time in Vietnam was telling me that's how they drink their coffee over there. Except her - she drinks it black then spoons out the condensed milk at the end

I'm not drinking it with condensed milk, but I am drinking the Sang Tao coffee from Vietnam. The Culi beans have a definite chocolate flavour - very tasty.

There are several different types of Vietnamese coffee - the Civet dropping one is just one. From my own reading about it (the Civet one) there is a massive fake industry that's now bigger than the real stuff.

I've yet to try it.
