My other half is taking me up for a birthday meal at Petrus in early November smile & I'd like to take her out for a decent dinner in Chinatown the night before.
Can anyone suggest a really good restaurant please?

Haozhan

My ex-boss was in love with the place and he was obsessed with Chinese food. Apparently the chef/owner is ex-Hakkasan.

I don't like Chinese food, but I love Haozhan so it must be good!

Thanks for the suggestion.
I notice having a quick scout around that many say avoid Chinatown if you want a decent Chinese!
We'll be staying in the Rembrandt in Knightsbridge which is within easy walking distance from Sth Kensington tube, so I'm willing to try other restaurants that aren't in Chinatown.

Kudos

I was in wang Kei the other night. Usual crap service, shared a table with another couple, but that's the whole point in going. Food wasn't bad, £20 each for starter, main and 2 beers each

Wong Kai is not a patch on it's glory days.

A Chinese petrol head friend of mine who knows a number of Chinese restaurant owners in that area does say 'if you want a decent Chinese do not go to China Town ....'

However for a decent (though not great) Chinese I always go to the Joy King Lau - you'll find it's where a lot of the local Chinese actually go, as well as the BBC (British Born Chinese group)

Oh if you want real Szechuan food, then head over to Bishops Gate/Liverpool Street. In Middlesex Street there's a tatty looking place called My Old Place. Service is A La Chinoise (so as soon as the food is cooked, not by courses so ignore starters and just share), the waiters are rushed and to the point, the place looks tatty, but the food is superb, the portions massive, the prices cheap, and it is real Szechuan food, not the usual Cantonese version we normally see (it also means that some of the more generic dishes on the menu, such as Sweet & Sour, as Szechuan style). Couple of things. The place is always packed, which can make is a little slow, you can't book so be prepared to queue, also be prepared to be one of the few non-Chinese in there, and finally take cash - their credit card machine has not worked in years.

My recommendation - Chicken with peanuts in chilli sauce - it's the best Gong Bao Chicken (Kung Po) you're ever likely to have (they Anglicized their menu a while back).

For a really great Chinese in London try Hakkasan Hanway place, it's fantastic!
Try and get a table in the Ling Ling lounge if you can.

Simple rule - go where the Chinese go. If you're the only westerner there then it's a good place. Used to go to a great floating Chinese near crossharbour for yum cha and be the only westerners there - fantastic food, you'd eat till your trousers burst all for a tenner a head.

It's still there and very very good (especialy for Dim Sum) and is reasonably priced.

Although not in Chinatown, I quite like the look of Taiwan Village in Fulham.

Not in china town but easily the best chinese food I have eaten.

There was a few of us and we had a private room upstairs. Great service.

Wasn't keen on the sharkfin soup.

Im glad its been taken off the menu, sharks fin, is basically a bit of cartilage and gristle, so no good for eating, plus they just cut the fin of the live shark and then throw it back in the sea to drown.

anyone who does that to any animal should have their limbs cut off then chucked in the sea an see how far that gets them.

Looks good. It seems geared towards groups of 4+ though, judging from the set menu theme.

Agreed.

Either kill the creature humanely and eat the whole thing, or leave it alone.

Those videos where the sides of live fish are sliced off and then the luckless beast is returned to the tank turn my stomach too.
