Trappist Beers

So I went to Bruges the weekend just gone, and discovered dark Trappist beers, and am now completely addicted!

I tried looking online, and the prices seem horrendous if I was to try and get some delivered! Does anyone know of any shops that sell them? Do any of the major supermarkets stock any Trappist beers? If not, is there a specialist in/around London that sells them?

also, any recommendations? I had a couple of 10-11% ones in Bruges that were amazing, so full of flavour!

Waitrose stock Chimay Blue. It's around £2.75 for a 33cl bottle.

Is Duvel a Trappist beer though? I thought it was Dutch?

Duvel is Belgian brewery but not Trappist. Dubbel is a style of beer brewed by Trappist breweries.

Leffe is an Abbey beer but not Trappist. There are six Belgian Trappist breweries, one Dutch and one Austrian.

I bought loads of Leffe Brune's from Calais on my way home, but wished i'd got some Trappist ones whilst in Belgium still!

Will pop to the big Tesco down the road from me this evening and have a look then!

ASDA stopped selling this a year or so ago, and I have not forgiven them yet

There's a lot of hype around Westvleteren ABT- almost impossible to get or sold at extortionate prices but supposed to be the best. A pretty close copy of it is made by Sint Barnadus- they are meant to use an old Westvleteren recipe as they used to brew the beer under contract.




It's good but personally I think the Rochefort 10 is better and I can get a pack of 8 for 12 Euros from my local wholesaler. I'm sure you could get it in the UK for less than a 4 quid a bottle. It's also available in less punishing 6&8 varieties like the Westvleteren and Sint Barnadus.

Give these guys a try. I went to their pub in White Lion Street near Angel tube and was blown away by the amount of choice and quality of what they had on offer.

My local sells St. Barnadus blue label, and it is bloody sensational.

Back when I was younger and lived in Cheltenham there was a Belgian pub that sold only Belgian beer. Sadly I had not developed a taste for the stuff back then (this was a *long* time ago) and when a mate dragged our group in there I confess I wasn't too impressed as it was a pretty Spartan affair just some benches and long tables.

God I'd give myself a metaphorical slap for not discovering Belgian beers 20-odd years ago if I could.

Not local to you but there's a Belgian beer pub in Norwich with a really good range on offer if you ever happen to be in the area. Called the Belgian Monk iirc.

Good call- I visit the Brighton branch when I'm in town, they have a selection of unusual stuff in there and are happy to give tasters (a lot of tasters if you display a modest knowledge of beer and are having a few snifters- I think I tasted everything they had on tap ).

Havent been in there for a few years as no longer in the area, but I can give this a big +1 if it is as good as it used to be

Have you got a brewery near you? Most tend to have beer shops attatched, by local one (Hogs Back Brewery near Farnham) stocks a massive range of stuff including quite a few trappist beers. Alas they don't sell Kwak though

That's worth knowing. Hogs Back Brewery isn't too far from me.
