I feel the need to get this off my chest.

I hate going into pubs/restaurants where the bar staff feel the need to hold the glass by the top inch whilst preparing your drink. You know, the section of glass where you're going to be applying your lips and supping from.

Last night in my local, a very good CAMRA pub, but they had new staff on. After pouring my drink (a cider), the barman picked it back up to investigate its fizzyness, but he picked it up using the top down method (i.e. palm over the top of the glass, fingers running down the sides).

I was shocked. What was more shocking was that he couldn't understand why I'd like it to be poured into a fresh glass.

Am I odd? Or would that bother you too?

In my pub a guy complained about the price so I took a big swig from his pint and asked if that was better.....

True story.

He complained about the price so you drank some of his drink then asked if that was better?

Maybe he was complaining that it was too cheap?

No you are not odd, that is disgusting. I know someone that used to be an in house trainer for a large pub chain and they always said staff were trained to hold the glasses by the body.

Like you I have refused a drink carried in such a way

I also hate it when ordering a glass of wine and they fill the glass with the bottom of one bottle and then to it up with a fresh one.

Annoying, yes.

Even when I make a drink in the showroom for customers I'm mindful to hold the top of the 'mug' (crap plastic cup) rather than the rim.

When I worked in a bar I was taught not to grip the glass around the rim when serving. Essentially your fingers will be going where someone's lips will be, so understandably, very offputting when it's done to you.

I don't see if often but I comment on it when I see it. It's hard not to be very patronising when you tell a barperson this, as sometimes they look like you are an anal tw*t. But I agree with the OP, given what a barman does with his or her hands, it's pretty disgusting.

This also goes with other inexperienced bar habits, like making a shandy by putting the beer spout right into the lemonade (so the next pint they pull has a taste of lemonade), a very very badly poured pint of guinness, or giving you a pint with an inch of foam which they intend to walk away from without topping up once they have finished their round.

My worst bugbear is when inexperienced bar people cannot manage a queue at the bar and just serve the people who appear in front of them. There may be people slightly out of their range of vision who have been patiently waiting, when they should be scanning up and down the bar and remembering who arrived first and nodding acknowledgement at those nect in line.

Working in a bar is not the hardest job in the world, but good par people can really make a place.

Glad it's not just me then... but the way he looked at me when I asked for a fresh glass was like I'd asked him to throw his keys in a bowl at a swingers party.

I shall continue in my liking of clean un-manhandled glasses smile

I agree about the queueing thing. I also get irritated when people sit or stand at the bar and make access for buying a drink difficult when it's busy. One bloke in a local here got quite stroppy when I was standing waiting to be served - he seemed think he owned that stretch of bar and his and his chum's conversation was paramount, not to be earwigged by drinkers waiting for a pint. the whole bar length was similarly blocked by stool-squatters.
