Just got a Landman 3 burner gas BBQ

it states that coals/ lava rocks etc are not necessary

i have only every cooked using coals before (non gas)
and on my mums gas BBQ that also used coals

so my questions are,
will i notice any differance to the taste not using some form of coal etc?
is it worth, forming some form of tray and adding some form of coals between burner and grill?(is that me being daft?)

thanks for your advice

I would go with the instructions that came with it.

I mean, if you want to put coals on it, then why did you buy a gas grill and not charcoal? Surely that defeats the purpose...

I didnt really look into what it was, as i got a very good deal on it, i wrongly thought it would be similar to my mums BBQ, which is gas, but also has coals on it

Try it following the instructions first time, and see how it is. You can always experiment with coals/rocks later if it isn't that great. smile

Usually with gas grills you get flavour from the juices dripping onto the hot rocks/coal, so I expect it probably will help.

My brother has one of these.

Basically, it's an outdoor oven/grill. Doesn't taste like BBQ at all.

You may as well cook in the kitchen and take the food outside.

thanks for the response, its sort of reinforcing my initial thoughts

so will do as advised, and try it as it is, then skillfully ammend it as necessary to incorporate coals, if i dont like it as it is lol

thanks again

If you want an authentic BBQ flavour, try using smoker chips:

Pricey but they do the job and are designed for gas webers. I'm not sure about other brands but I'm sure they'd work fine without messing up the internals.
