Restaurant in Berkshire

Hello,

Want to take the OH to a fun/quirky restaurant (somewhere a bit different) at the weekend without having to get on my knee's in front of the bank manager. Usually go to the nando's, pizza express, zizzi's type so something along those price lines.

Can anyone suggest anything? I'm in Reading but don't mind travelling half an hour out

The Crab at Chieveley is good. A little pricier than those places so you might want to consult their menu. Probably only pricey if you start into the fine wines rather than the food though.

You will prob have to drive there, mind.

If you wander a few doors down from your usual haunts, I thought Miller & Carter was pretty good at the weekend, for the Porterhouse anyway.

Not fun, or quirky, though, but it is in your price range

Isn't that big white one on the river reasonable? (Caversham) I forget the name now.

Perry's is nice although it's more of a cafe then a restaraunt.

I've also had some nice food at the Devil's Inn (Knowl Hill area) but apparently it's under new management since I last went.

I quite liked 'The Crown' in Bray

Not too far away and good quality pub food although the ambiance on the day we went could have been better!

(we had an old lady with the most annoying ability to say 'um' with differant accents, every 2 seconds whenever anybody said anything she agreed with...'um, uum, ummmm, um um um...think the couple the next table down and the woman's husbond clcoked us laughing our heads off about it after a while)

Used to always go to Bel and the Dragon in Reading when I lived out that way, food was always good. Not been there for a couple of years though so may have changed.

Piper's Island. Not had good reports from there for years.

Thinking about it now the one time I went there it was a private function. Nice venue all the same.

Monroes American diner. Never been, you can try it for me

Sweeney & Todd pie shop. Everyone loves pies in a 70's eatery, right?

Or if you like OK-ish sushi, Yo Sushi in House of Fraser have been doing their Sumo Sundays (£20 each, all you can eat)

Please note I'm taking your budget into account. Personally, I'd save up a bit and go for the Menu Gourmand at L'Ortolan in Shinfield http://www.lortolan.com/

L'Ortolan is excellent but out of budget I'd say and not likely to get in this weekend.
Hand and Flowers in Marlow does some good deals (you won't get in there either)
Isn't the Crown a Heston place now?

Nice places tend to need booking in advance.

What's the London St Brasserie like these days?
I'm a big fan of El Pic, a tapas place in Camberley.
