Decided to try making Eton Mess tonight. The meringues came out perfect, the strawberries were lovely and ripe, I was whipping the cream... whoops! splitsville. Nice bowl of lumps of butter in buttermilk.
No more cream...
...but in the freezer I had a tub of Flake ice cream. Woohoo! Saved the dish!

you know the original eaton mess was a trifle (i think) that was dropped and then shoved it back in a bowl and called it an eaton mess.
even though, If i could eat it, I would as it is a pretty good thing.
Eton, not Eaton. As in the school. even though, If i could eat it, I would as it is a pretty good thing.
There are a few myths about regarding the origin of the dish - one is that Eton prefects were carrying a strawberry meringue to the headmaster, dropped it, and scooped it back in to the dish. Another is that it was a strawberry meringue that was sat on by a dog at a picnic at Eton.
"Some say the original dessert had no meringue in it all. All we know is...."
