I have a kid, so I totally understand the 'ten second rule' for dropping food on the floor.

But I was just making a cup of tea and a sugar lump dropped from my grasp..... How many seconds should accept as ok for something falling in the cat's litter tray?

Generally, I opt for 10-20 seconds for my own food stuffs....could be days if making for others.

All joking aside, is there any correlation between the number of seconds on the floor, and the amount of contamination, or is full contamination instantaneous?

I think the curve on the graph of time vs contamination starts of steep, but then after say, 30 seconds, it's probably not going to get any more contamination. Hence why I ate a candy ball thing that fell off a cupcake that had been on my kitchen floor for a day.

Why does it take you 10 seconds to pick something up off the floor, how old are you?

Its normally the 3 second rule because thats how long it takes the dog to scramble over and grab it.
