Dinner & Hotel for Anniversary - Near Reading
Discussion
Looking for a nice restaurant to take my girlfriend to for our 3 year anniversary within an hours drive of Reading.
Would prefer to stay on site to avoid messing around with taxis. Anyone have any good suggestions? Don't mind the style as long as the food is great (i.e. better than your average pub with a room) and the accommodation is nice too. Budget around £250 for both of us.
Thanks in advance!!

Hotel du Vin in Henley would be a good shout I reckon.
or in sonning, http://www.thefrenchhorn.co.uk/
Might be at the top end of your budget, but is really first class.

L'Ortolan is wonderful but no rooms and you would blow your budget on just the meal.
You might get a deal at The Vineyard at Stockcross (nearer Newbury).
Hand and Flowers is probably out of budget.
I don't know what the Crab at Chieveley is like these days but they had some great seafood last time I went. Interesting rooms as well, most with a private hot-tub which is fun. Not cheap but better value than some of the other places I've mentioned.

I live just around the corner from L'ortolan and I've heard nothing but negative feedback from the people I know that have gone (only 2 couples mind) so I've never bothered looking into it.You might get a deal at The Vineyard at Stockcross (nearer Newbury).

Guessing you've been and liked it?

Yes, love it. We've been 3 or 4 times and are planning another trip before the end of the year. We have taken friends and they have also enjoyed the experience. It compares very favorably in both quality of food, service and overall experience with its peers. We have eaten at many top places so it's not the only good restaurant we have tried.Guessing you've been and liked it?
Did they have any specific complaints?
I do know one couple who didn't like it but by their own admission it's not really their thing.
