What's wrong with this egg?
Discussion
We very occasionally see these at work. The larger red parts are "blood spots" (released from the chickens ovary) and the red tint in the egg white is blood from these.
Eggs sold in Supermarkets are graded using a light detection method. Eggs with these sort of defects are sent for braking where they are separated and used for baking and so on. Obviously there is less quality control in locally sourced goods.
That is one of the largest blood spots I've seen after being in the egg industry for 10 years!

It was from a friend who has their own chickens and it was a double yoker!Eggs sold in Supermarkets are graded using a light detection method. Yep, sounds about right. It's quiet rare across the board but when it's home-grown there is obviously no quality control.Smaller blood spots are not dangerous at all and can be eaten but I think when they are that large they are not very appealing.
