Where in the World are the best places to eat?
Discussion
I was once amazed to find (amongst a sea of badly deep fried tourist muck) one of the best curry restaurants I have ever come across in my life in Cyprus, we also found a small traditional cafe type place which was good, but I don't think I'll be racing back there for the food.
Now it's here I'm sure you'll agree that it's often better to go 'off Piste' to get some genuine traditional food.
This morning we sat in a very run down 'Local cafe' type place and ate a lovely basic meal, as soon as we sat down they were there with umpteen bowls of veg, salad, dips and soft fresh bread whilst we studied the menu, I opted for mixed offal/meat and er, chips!
On balance rice would have been better as the liver, kidneys, bits of chicken and god knows what else came bright yellow and curried. I was a bit cautious at first, but 'When in Rome' etc so I got stuck in and it was delicious! Steaks and pizzas are also very good over here, if not a bit expensive given the surroundings you eat them in (sometimes resembling a garden shed) and ranging from about the same to more than you would pay in the UK, I haven't been here long so more to find yet, but paid about £30 for two pizzas and two bottles of local beer.
The locals have photo ID cards so they get discounts.
So over to you, what did you you find on your travels?

We landed in Sorento on honeymoon almost three years ago and explained to the hotel owner that we wanted to try a restaurant favoured by the locals.
He literally marched us on foot for ten minutes by which time I was beginning to think bad thoughts. We arrived at a small, open fronted restaurant where we were seated and presented with a basic menu of local fish, wood fired pizza and pasta.
I opted for frito misto and my wife of 24 hours had a simple pizza. It was so fresh and tasty that we struggled to find a better place to eat even by pushing the budget more than quadruple.
We ended up arranging a cooking lesson there a few nights later where we made fresh pizzas and gnocchi with Mama and her son. Fantastic.
I dont know the name unfortunately.

Tenerife. What an Island. After never being before, I never thought that it would be such a beautiful place and the more north you go, the better it gets.
My wife and I came across a very rustic local restaurant, we spoke little Spanish, they no English. Wine was out of a barrel, served in water bottles, one beer on draft and just one option on the menu ...... well there wasn't a menu.
We had the most lovely garlic thin fries with a large bowl of salad and the most amazing meat ........ to this day I have no idea what, but it was a large slab and more than enough for the two of us..
Absolutely delicious.
London, New York, Madrid, Rome, Paris yada yada .......... ate in all of them, never had a better meal than the one in Tenerife that cost about 25 euros, all in for the two of us. Absolute bargain.

Cuba certainly isn't known for good food and on the whole I would agree, however we found a little seafood restaurant in a cave within Varadero park. Best lobster I have had anywhere in the world and the cheapest also. So very fresh and tasty, think it worked out about £20 for a three course meals with three lobsters between the two of us. I was very stuffed and we tipped the same again due to the service we received.
I like Theo Randall in London, had a really excellent meal once at Lake Louise in Canada. The Quay in Sydney is meant to be superb and really is very disappointing, Aria is better if eating there.
But my favourite is the Devonshire Arms in Middle Handley in Derbyshire, my kind of food.

Odd for me to be posting in the food and drink forum because I actually don't give much thought to food, I view it as fuel and little else, I certainly don't get excited by food.
That said, and taking my food-view into account I am going to answer the title question with the best PLACES to eat, not necessarily the best food but the best locations I have eaten.
Malta, Mdina, up on the walls of the old city is a café, on a hot summers day with a slight breeze it is heaven, cats lay in the sun, the view is great and the smell of the food mixes with the smell from the flowers.
Cephalonia, The St Geroges Castle café, A little place that is only open in summer, quiet, lots of flowers and shade, lovely family own it and run it. Lovely simple food, we always walk up the hill and look around the castle itself and then head down and have a cool drink and some Souvlaki.
Germany, Trier, Restaurant Ratskeller, which has a vaulted ceiling, great atmosphere. I have had lots of good nights out here with friends.

One of my most memorable meals was in Chateau D'Etoges.
Stumbled across this place last summer, lovely chateau, brilliant restaurant, and great driving roads!Stumbled into a couple of places that have served some of the nicest food I've had in Germany, both Hamburg, both within a mile of each other
Casa di Roma served us some really really good meals, they're on Lange Reihe just up from the Hauptbahnhof Nord
The other was an Indian restaurant, very ornate, luxury setup, completely hidden from view, you'd walk past it and never realise. I think it's on the corner of Steindamm and Danziger Strasse. Better curry than I've had in Bradford, possibly Brick La too

Isla del Sol in Bolivia.
Beatiful, rustic island with a few tiny restaurants scattered here and there. Mud hut on the top of the hill, candle lit, no electricity, overlooking one of the most beautiful coastlines and sunsets I'd ever seen.
Simply perfect, Kingfish with local herbs in a sublime sauce- Freshly caught and put into a woodfired oven.
Incredible.

I love Bolivia, the best food I had there (bar the steak) was Jochi, sort of a small wild boar that lives in burrows throughout the amazon and surrounding area. Really really tasty, cooked on a fire pit down by a river outside Santa Cruz.
Yet to go to Lake Titicaca though, looks good.
I always thought king fish was a salt water fish? - edit, learn something new every day, seems there is a big variety of kingfish. Thought it was just one!

No Michelin Stars or AA Rosettes, but on the small island of Fuerteventura, in the town of Caleta de Fuste is Fado Rock.
Every night there is a queue, the staff are amazing and the food is even better. Pure theatre cooking at the table with flames, steaks on a hot stone and a kebab of wonders.
Entertainment was from an amazing guitarist, just loud enough to be heard but not too loud.

Liked 1 of the restaraunts on tne main square, cracking steak. Also, some place up in the hills away from sorrento, (name escapes me) but the son looked like a young elvis, food was fantastic.
Whilst in Paris many years ago, I was taken to a back street restaurant, way off the beaten track, a tatty old place and had a Dover sole with just some good French bread, a cream sauce of some sort and a glass of crisp white wine. It changed my life about the way I thought about food and have never looked back, thank you Jean wherever you may be now! Needless to say, I have absolutely no idea where this restaurant is but I hope it is still as inspiring as the day I visited...
