Glasgow restaurants and bars..

Hey guys n gals..

Just wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for places to wine n dine in Glasgow. Heading up at the end of March. Only been there once, that was years ago and was for a lads weekend.

Had an excellent meal just before Christmas here http://www.bothyglasgow.co.uk/. Probably the best steak I've ever eaten

Never had a bad meal in Red Onion in the city centre, west Campbell street I think it is. Service is spot on, nothing too much for them like making something that's not on the current menu. Really nice restaurant with warm cosy open fire.

Glasgow now has hundreds of good restaurants & bars to choose from - some further info would help narrow it down!

What area of Glasgow - City, Merchant City, West End, Southside?
Style of food?
Budget?

The above restaurant options are worth checking out, as is No.16 on Byres Rd for great Scottish food, Italian Kitchen & Italian Caffe in Merchant City, Sapporo Teppanyaki for Japanese/sushi.

Bars - do you want traditional, modern, real ale, cocktails, etc etc?

As others said there are loads of excellent restaurants in Glasgow although no Michelin starred ones. We have some amazing Indian restaurants like Mother India and Chaophraya is good for Thai food

Two Fat Ladies are all good as is Red Onion, there are some brilliant burger places too.

In the interest of balance King's Cafe do deep fried Mars bars. And if you want the best kebab in Glasgow head for Red Pepper in Pollokshields. It's a kebab shop with no white customers which is the best recommendation there is.

I can't believe someone used the word Michelin in a thread about Glasgow food ffs. Edit: edited out before I posted- someone saw sense.

I've lived in Glasgow for all of my 36 years, and have never encountered a chippie that sells deep fried mars bars, have never seen one, and don't know of anyone who has eaten one - I don't get it!

If you do want a good fish n chips try the Merchant Chippie on Ingram St, award winning and your choice of fish is cooked to order in organic oil.

Thanks guys, thats great.

Should have been more specific. Its not a special occasion or anything, so just good quality food. Thai is a good shout as the Mrs loves it.
Ive already booked a table for Butchers Shop, then maybe a trip to the BrewDog just down the road.

As are staying the Charing Cross side but will be going all over the city as its our first time up there. A good chippy is always nice for lunch

Lunch at Republics is good. Great selection of beer, quality pizza and cosy atmosphere.




Dinner at DHABBA.....Only been once but it's still the best curry I've had to date.

If you want sit-in rather than takeaway and are in the City Centre shopping, I'd recommend a visit to "The Chippy Doon The Lane" hidden away here for posh fish n chips - http://www.thechippyglasgow.com/

Chinaskis at Charing Cross is a nice low-key bar, hard to spot in plain sight as there's no sign outside (keeps the riff-raff away). Lebowskis on Argyle St at Finnieston is a short walk from Charing Cross and is a nice bar also - both of these places do decent food if you want somewhere more casual that won't break the bank, but still nice enough to keep your missus happy ;-)

For burgers and beers Cocktail & Burger on Sauchiehall St is a cosy wee place tucked away in a basement (used to be the old Republic Bier Hof from memory, sister bar to the worthy recommendation of Republic Bier Halle above) that does excellent burgers and a wide choice of beers you'll have never heard of.

Most of my favourite restaurants have already been mentioned, but pub-wise, I'd reccommend the Horseshoe bar. A 'proper' pub!

Finnieston is where all the good places are starting to pop up. Kelvingrove cafe is without a doubt the best place for cocktails in Glasgow and they do cracking food too. Across the raod from it there is Saltys which is a great chippy, along the road you have the Finnieston and destill which are also great, there is also as mentioned The Butchershop, which I pretty much live In as my flat mate is the manager.

However during January, check out The Grill on the corner, it's doing 50% off all food!

The shenaz behind Mitchell library is excellent for an Indian.

All good stuff here. I think someone mentioned Guy's in the Merchant City - my favourite glasgow restaurant. Freshly made ravioli every day and superb steaks...

We come to Glasgow from Aberdeen for what is in my opinion the best steak ever, a lovely evening is always had. Grill room at bar 29. Hmmm mouth is watering just thinking about it.

The mussel inn if you like seafood. It's on hope street in the center I'm sure.

Also mother India cafe next to kelvin grove. Go early and avoid queuing later on. They don't do bookings but best curry I've had in ages.
