Pouch of microwave rice - have I poisoned myself?
Discussion
A very very cheapo microwave pouch of rice, that went out of date about 3 months ago. Cos it was an unopened microwave pouch I ate it without a second thought but it dawned on me just as I finished my meal that it tasted a bit weird, and now an hour later it's dawning on me that I'm feeling a mite queasy...
Have I done something horrible to myself? Other than eating nasty cheapo microwave rice, that is.
Have I done something horrible to myself? Other than eating nasty cheapo microwave rice, that is.White rice lasts 4-5 years.... So you're fine.
What's happened is that it's gone a bit rancid with the fatty acids becoming more present. But you'll be fine.

I love eatbydate - brilliant resource - but couldn't find any reference to microwave (presumably precooked?) rice...What's happened is that it's gone a bit rancid with the fatty acids becoming more present. But you'll be fine.

Sorry to say, but Mrs V8 (was QA for a big food supply chain) says rice can harbour the bacillus cereus bacteria.... symptoms 1-3 hours after eating - relatively mild food poisoning. Get the bog roll in the freezer..
Baby wipes. It's the way to go.
(and my thanks to Mrs V8 also!)

Yet.
However you 'should' be ok. I'm sure the pre-cooked stuff in pouches is pretty much nuked as part of the production process.
Surely I'd at the very least be feeling queasy by now if I was in trouble? Felt iffy for an hour yesterday (right after realising it tasted dodgy) but nowt today at all.

And yes - I'd kind of assumed that it'd be completely sterile, but I'm not familiar enough with the process to take it for granted, especially with the particular issues around rice.

Off topic a bit but that site peddles the hoary old myth about drinking vast amounts of water; now widely disagreed with by 'proper' nuitrition experts as a misinterpretation of a 1945 (I think) study of hydration from ALL sources. What's happened is that it's gone a bit rancid with the fatty acids becoming more present. But you'll be fine.
