Bars/pubs Cardiff

Hi all, does anyone know of any decent pubs in Cardiff? It's a stag do, average age about 40 I guess so not really looking for plastic liquid/oceana type clubs but more decent beer, live music a bonus, least amount of chavs! Think we're staying in Cardiff bay

Quite a few bars in Cardiff Bay. Main ones are The Mount Stuart (Wetherspoons), Terra Nova and Salt.

The Bay is fine but it's either all or nothing. Packed in the summer when the sun is out but can be pretty dead in the winter. Good place to stay and drink in the day though then head into town in the night.

I don't spend a lot of time in town these days but some good places will be the bars on Mill Lane, Walkabout on St Mary's Street or for more upmarket (and expensive) try Laguna which is in the Park Plaza Hotel on Greyfriars Road the other side of town. Again this can either be busy or pretty dead but there are several livlier bars across the road like Lloyds No1 Bar.

For decent beer the area off Westgate Street has Zero Degrees, the City Arms, and the Urban Taphouse.

Pubs I like in town:

• Zero degrees
• The Yard
• Rummer Tavern
• Goat Major
• Dempseys
• Glassworks (formerly Copa)
• Urban tap house (used to be Fire island)

Buffalo bar / 10 feet tall aren't so bad for more clubby places. Also a fair few Wetherspoons around (5 of so off the top of my head in the centre of town).

Would avoid Walkabout. It's st. Some ok places on Mill Lane, although a few of the places always seem a little too poncey for me (plus I've experienced trouble in Peppermint there). As for bars down the bay - there's also Bar Cwtch in Jolyon's and the Eli Jenkins. Would probably opt for once of these 2 over the usual offerings (Salt, Terra Nova / the new spoons).

The Bay is pretty dull really, much better off in town.

The bay has a few pubs, but they're all pretty generic (though the Eli Jenkins is OK). I'd head into the City Centre.

This. Slightly more expensive than other pubs nearby, but the choice of beer is superb. They also do a limited food menu. Zero Degrees is interesting, nice food but I didn't really get on with their beers (brewed on site) the last time I went.

No nonsense pubs: The Goat Major, City Arms, The Cottage (St Mary's Street), The Queens Vaults, The Duke of Wellington. All are very decent, City Arms tends to have a wider selection of beer/cider though. You could string a pretty good pub crawl out of the above.

Greyfriars Road is a total sthole on Friday and Saturday nights.

The last time I was in Urban Taphouse (just before Christmas) their own beer (they are Tiny Rebel's pub) was £2.50 a pint. Guest ales were just over £3 I think. Elswhere in Cardiff you'll pay £4 for a pint of fizzy pss.
