Morrisons - 'Market Street'

Now I'm not easily impressed, but Morrison's 'Market Street' section is something else.
For years a local Facebook campaign ran 'I wish Reigate had a Waitrose instead of that crappy Morrisons'. Perhaps they've listened and upped their game?
Normally I don't bother shopping in Reigate because parking is a drag, but today I was passing through and thought I'd pop in to Morrisons to pick up a few bits to make my office lunches for the week.
Wow. Just wow.
The choice of fresh produce is incredible. Far more comprehensive than Waitrose, but at Asda prices.
It's a foodie Mecca with stuff like shiitake mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, four varieties of chillies inc. Scotch Bonnets, pink fir apple potatoes, those funny blue potatoes, lychees, rambutans, fresh dates, mooli, taro, kohlrabi, Jerusalem artichokes, and fresh turmeric root all loose by the kilo.
Fish and meat also looked good.
Om nom nom.
I'm no/low carb at the moment, hence majoring on the veggies rather than starchy crap. I shall be the envy of all who survey my lunch box.

Does yours have the dry ice machines to keep the veg fresh (veg, I said VEG!), it's like doing your shopping in the future.

My only gripe about Morrisons being that the wine selection isn't that great, and even average wines are expensive. Wolf Blass Aussie chardonnay costs £9.99 when this is only £7.49 in the village shop.
Never, ever ever ever, pay more than £7.50 for a bottle at mozzers.
You have to look out for the gems, but they are there all year round. There was a super champagne for valentines this week (albeit at more than £7.50) but when you see a one you like its best to bulk buy, but honestly there are some superb ones in there if you know what to look for.
For instance, this;
was under £7 before Xmas, though it's back up to £12.50 for now. But it will come down again, & when it does I'm buying a couple of cases (esp if there's a bother buy 6 save 25% offer on).
Until then, I'm depleting the entire norths supply of faustino 1 at £13 from Asda

I also noticed this at a formerly grotty Morrisons in Edinburgh. I now have strange shopping preferences - Waitrose, ALDI and Morrisons.
If they can get their cheese up to scratch it's happy days. The TESCO offering is now looking rather squeezed - I want good quality every day produce at reasonable prices, not the excessively cheap value stuff that is subsidised by 'special' ranges that are expensive and poor quality to give an illusion of choice.

Highly under rated is Morrisions. I wish I had a local one, my local Waitrose is only small so doesn't have the selection is less than ideal.
I agree, I do like Morrisons. Our local one has a fresh herb stand with what looks like dry ice cascading down over it, makes the produce look very tempting.These were called "stores of the future" and have been around for a while in some locations.
Just goes to show that they are not targeting the correct customers and getting people into stores.
They had by far the best Christmas campaign but worst sales. Ken may have to come out of retirement.

The actual food from Morrison's went up in quality a decade ago, all that's changed over the last couple of years is the presentation with the sprays over the veg and such.Our local morrisons was a (big) Co-op from the time it was built until a few years ago. No-one went there except the desperate (and us when my daughter had a staff discount card for working p/t at the one round the corner). Was usually like a graveyard on a Sunday night.
Morrisons took it over and the place has hummed ever since - they have recently extended it! Puzzled that recent reports say they have slipped down the supermarket placings.

Would that be the one on Ferry road? We used to stop by there on occasion, and although it was grotty it always had massive reductions on fresh fish on a Sunday tea time if you timed it right. We've moved from the area now, but our new local Morrisons has a new posh market street that we find excellent.Mobile Chicane said:

Intermarche in Portugal do that - they mist the seafood and all the veg. i like standing in the 'line of fire' on a roasting hot day My only gripe about Morrisons being that the wine selection isn't that great, and even average wines are expensive. The one on portobello road has the misty things and has market street too.I drive past ASDA and Tesco Superstores to shop at the new Morrison's because of the selection that you describe. The others don't come close.
Not great for bacon or chicken but they can't get it all spot on.
The local Sainsbury's has always been a total joke for quality of produce and lack of selection. Not to mention queuing times!

Farming Today on Radio 4 interviewed one of the haulage drivers, who would never buy meat at any of the other supermarkets. Why? Well, when he rolls up with a delivery at Morrisons, if the paperwork isn't spot on, the entire delivery gets rejected. The other supermarkets just shrug their shoulders and sign for it. It makes his job a nightmare sometimes, but it shows how much control they have. They came out of the recent horse meat scandal rather better than most supermarkets, thanks mostly to the fact that they own a lot of the chain, from farms, through abattoirs, butchers, processors etc.
There has been rumours this week that the Morrison family want to take it back into private ownership. That might not be a bad move at all.
