Coke prices

The fizzy stuff, not the snorty stuff. I drink quite a lot of Diet Coke. I used to buy the 4 x 2L bottle packs, like these :



The price used to be £4 (= 50p per litre).
Over time, the price went up gradually to £6 (= 75p a litre).
(there would be the occasional special offer of £4 or £5 for a limited time).

Now they are discontinuing the 2L bottles and replacing them with 1.75L bottles for £1.85 (a whopping £1.06 a litre!). There are no multipacks are available as yet, but there is an introductory offer where you can buy 2 bottles for £2 (= 57p a litre). I have no doubt the standard special offer will become 2 bottles for £3 (= 86p a litre).

I think this methodology is endemic now within the food & drink industry. Prices are pushed up to the point where they need to repackage the product in smaller quantities to make it appear that they aren't gouging the customer on price, when that is exactly what they are doing. We all know that crisp packets contain fewer crisps nowadays, chocolate bars are smaller, etc.

I have no reason in particular for posting this; just having a bit of a whinge really!

I like Diet Coke too and often hunt and for best prices. Cans seem to be the deal at the moment, I picked up 30 cans for £7 in Asda the other day, works out at 23p/can or around 70p/litre.

Oddly I much prefer it from a can than the bottle.

I always buy it when it's on offer which seems to be most of the time for the 2L bottles. At the moment they are 3 for £5 which it too dear for me. At Xmas they were 3 for £3 (2L bottles) so I stocked up.

If they aren't on offer then I get something else which is on offer like cans of fanta fruit twist or failing that some fruit juice!

Coke definitely tastes different from different containers. My favourite is from the taller glass bottles you get in France. Costs a lot though so only when on holiday!

Inflation is inflation. There are two ways of dealing with it - put the price up or make the item smaller. Putting the price up has been found to be more noticeable than making the thing smaller I believe.

If you use the BoE inflation adjusting website I think you'll probably find the price has been fairly stable per litre, in real terms.

It's God's way of telling you to stop drinking so much of the 'horrible stuff!

Cans would seem to be much better value and you're getting a 'fresh' brew every time surely?

Tbh, the price increases are great as far as my health/pocket is concerned. Used to routinely get through half a dozen cans a day but these days, when the large multi-packs are closer to £10 than £5, they just don't end up in the trolley.

Reducing the size also works on the healthy living side as they claim it means people will drink less, of course no one drinks 2 bottles in a sitting now or eats 2 of the 3/4 sized chocolate bars. Like the move to 25kg bags of building materials 25kg is too light to only carry one but two weigh more than the previous too heavy bag.

I have to be honest and say the wife bought me some Sure compressed deodorant and it has lasted as long as the larger cans.

I buy either diet coke or diet pepsi, I care not which, that's the way I roll.

So at Tesco each fortnight I check which of the two is on special offer and refuse to pay more than £1 for a 2L bottle. One or other brand has been on sale except maybe once in the last year.

I noticed this weekend that they were selling 1.5L bottles for £1.86, and 2L bottles for £1.

The fall back position is to get an 8 pack from Costco when I'm there. Less than £1 a 2L bottle that way.

Your issues is as much to do with what your chosen retailer stocks as it is with the commodity price of Coke.
If the retailer sees little value in selling 4x2l then they'll stop selling it and do away with similar promotions. They may do the odd bulk promo to ease the transition but ultimately if the market is heading to 1.25l from 2l plus that's what the retailer will stock.

Maybe a different retailer or a larger branch of the same retailer will still sell what you want.
