Recommend some fizz/champagne please; for 70th birthday

My old dear likes fizz and her 70th is approaching, so I thought I'd buy her a case of something nice, but I've got no idea about what; she likes fizz generally, is partial to rosé but not too fussy as long as it's dry but not puckeringly so. If quaffing something cheap she tends to drink Codorniu cava if that helps. I'm looking either for something I can mail order/buy online or if necessary I'll toddle to a suitable vintner if one exists in weegieland. Budget isn't large, I was thinking £150-200 although I could go a bit more.

How about something english like Camel Valley or Nyetimber? both more fruity and with flavour rather than the bubbles and acid approach of some of the French houses.

Depends entirely on your tastes. Pol Roger, Lanson, Moet and Chandon Imperial, Bollinger Speial Cuvee, Veuve Cliquote, are all readily available and very fine champagne. Personally I think the pink Veuve Cliquote is an unusual and fine wine.

Nice choice to have to make and I wish you well in the choice. Not far behind you I am 68 now.

Without sounding like a complete cock, I've tasted the whole Cristal, Dom, Krug etc and this one was super. Yes, it's not cheap and all those "pop stars" love a video of it in their "music videos", however, it's the best I've tasted.

If she likes pink I would go with Veuve Cliquote or Laurent Perrier. But it will be £40-50 per bottle.

Belle Epoque 2006 is about £90, great looking bottle too. Or you could spend double that and get the 2004 Belle Epoque Rose.

I'm one of these strange people who actually prefers Prosecco to Champagne. For years our "house pop" was Veuve. It's now La Marca Prosecco. I've tried many, but this one I like very much.

I've always been a Champagne fan - love the stuff. However, more and more, I'll have a some good Prosecco in the fridge - it's gotten to a stage now where it really is remarkably good!

I can only agree. Pressecco is much better than cheap champagne. The op asked for suggestions and decent champagne is his best bet for such an event IMO. Personally my limit in the UK would be under £40 a bottle but that decision is up to te OZ.

Regarding Italian wines, I've always enjoyed them on holiday over there; a nice Chianti in Tuscany is difficult to beat, but never enjoyed them in the UK. However, having recently discovered Gavi, I've been converted.

Really? I've gone right off Moet because it tastes so un-smooth, for want of a better description. Far nicer budget champagnes about.

I too send many years in Italy, in some place I ate the wine was either free or cheaper than the bottled water!!

Agree with all the comments re the quality of Prosecco, it really has got very very good. Stick with a DOC Valdobbiadene and you'll be ok. There was a time that the only stuff was "nasti". No more. Do you know if you can get Marztimino in this country? Lovely stuff.
