Popped into our local town on Saturday and along with all the other market stalls there was one of those butchers that work from a large van. It's the type that sells 'job lots' of meat for £20-£30 and has the loudspeaker system to advertise their offers.

Never really paid much attention to these guys but was wondering how they compare to supermarket or high street butchers. Is the meat any good and do you generally save anything? The only price I noticed was 5lb of rib eye steak for £20, which seemed pretty reasonable?

5lbs of ribeye for £20 is scarily cheap. You would normally pay about that for 1kg a a local butchers.

I bought a load of steak from one and the quality was absolutely shocking, despite looking a good piece of steak.

Very tough and very chewy, they may differ from one to the other but I wouldn't risk it again.

Depends on how bothered you are about the quality?

Just don't expect a smiling free range chicken (that was raised listening to Mozart) for those prices.

At worst, it'll feed the dogs. wink

Is your local town near a racecourse, perchance?
