Where to drink in central Bristol?

Down for a gig in Bristol tomorrow, a city I have very fond memories of, but haven't lived in since 1988. Where to go for a decent pint?

Haven't been to Bristol for a good few years but the last time I was there I went to a pub called Start The Bus which was really good.

King Street is the best place to drink in my opinion. Proper pubs and lots of craft beers. Start at the asking William and work your way down to the Apple or reversed.

Real ale. My local was The Highbury Vaults back in the day, but I am not sure I can drag the decrepit bones all the way up St Michaels Hill.

Halfway up St Michaels Hill behind the BRI is the Hillgrove:

All the real ales you can handle, and usually open late too.

Bag of Nails in Hotwells is also good, or the Hope and Anchor also on Jacobs Wells Road. There's one down the side of the Hippodrome too (not the Hatchet) which used to be OK, but not been for ages.

King Street not a bad shout then but it is a mix of the good and the down right awful...

Highbury Vaults is still classic if not a bit studenty.

The Llandoger is awful now. All fosters and stag do's... Shame

The Reckless Engineer opposite Temple Meads is also far better than it looks, then, although I don't know what other options have opened on Victoria Street.

The Bridge Inn is round the corner from the Cornubia on Passage St, and is also nice.

Plenty of pubs and bars in the King Street direction. The whole city will be substantially less scuzzy than you remember - I actually walked up Stapleton Road last week, and I wasn't stabbed once.

I was out on king street last weekend and it has improved 100 fold over the last 5 years, we went to the beer emporium,small bar and the naval volunteer which has been completely transformed. Avoid the German beer place on queen Charlotte Street its total rubbish.

I also reccomend king street. beer emporium is good and my favourite the naval volunteer which is recently under New ownership and does lots of fantastic beer good food and knowledge able staff

If you remember all the old wooden seating and glass sheltered area out the back (all since replaced) my Dad designed it as an a student of architecture some 45 odd years ago

It out lived him as in true PH fashion he totally overspecced it!
