:Sigh: This ought to be simple...but it doesn't seem to be.

Nobody who cooks in my house seems capable of working out that veggie oil is in the supermarket veggie oil bottle and that by default the oil in the pouring bottle is olive oil - family and friends often cook for my Dad if I'm away so I need a more user friendly solution to stop them using all my olive oil!

I'd already gone back to keeping veggie oil in the supermarket bottle to try to help things but it doesn't work.

I'd like to have nice glass bottles that say "olive oil" and "vegetable oil" but they don't seem to exist without just sticking labels on which I don't think will work as they will get greasy.

I've googled for what seems like forever but can't find a solution.

Has anyone got anything nifty that would help?

Any half-decent EV olive oil should be kept out of direct sunlight in a tin or dark coloured bottle. UV does olive oil no favours whatsoever.

How about getting a local engraver to write the labels on glass?

Or can you still get DIY glass etching kits?

Maybe a few different coloured vintage bottles with pouring spouts added, etched with nice designs as labels.

I think I've just given myself an idea!

...and it's a good one, thanks.

I've also found nice some looking slate labels that hang around the neck of bottles...that might work, then they come off for washing.

I half suspect you might find it's not a "mistake" as such but peoples belief that everything cooked in olive oil is healthier and that's why they go through it.

My MIL (bless) only uses extra virgin olive oil for cooking. Because "its the best" and therefore must be better for you.

Maybe hide the olive oil when you're not there and see what happens.

I suspect the culprits don't want to use vegetable oil at all and will only use it if it's the only possible choice.
I mainly use olive oil, but have just bought some expensive coconut oil to try out.
It could be worse biggrin

LOL and this is what worries me, you should have seen the place when my sister couldn't find the curry powder! You might be on to something though...maybe I'm never going to change them, but the chances of me remembering to hide the olive oil each time are pretty remote!

I can't find anything nice that isn't stonkingly expensive, I think it might be time for a trawl of the local potters to see what I can find or it'll be IKEA for cheap glass bottles until I find something better. The slate neck hanging labels look nice, I think I'll get a set of those to start with.

Coconut oil's ace, so long as you like everything to taste of coconuts. hehe

Get labels that say "cooking oil" and "dressing oil". That'll stump them.

Good job it is only me that cooks at home.

I'm like you OP, veg/sunflower/peanut etc are all kept in their respective bottles that they are bought in; in the cupboard, whereas the olive oil is decanted into a lovely oil bottle with a pourer which is kept on the work surface next to the oven.

It's quite like eating things cooked in Hawaiian Tropic sun tan oil.

I keep my oils in the bottles that they come in.

A 1ltr green pop bottle... like a Cidona bottle that lives in a cupboard in the kitchen.
