Is it just me or does anyone find a Sunday roast a bit boring? Even with all the trimmings etc, it just doesnt do anything for me.

yep, for the most part. Like many things, if it's done really well then it can be great e.g. rare beef or slow cooked lamb, home-made yorkshires, port gravy and actual flavours, but there's nothing inherently good about it for me. The way most people, restaurants, pubs make it is just vast and bland with mushy overboiled grey veg. It's popular because many people in the UK like lots of bland food.

I eat spicy food every day. A simple roast cooked well is my favourite food.

I've started slow roasting beef at 60 degrees , it's fantastic, look up some recipies , you'll never cook it at 180 degrees again

A roast is a thing of beauty and deliciousness. One thing that makes it worth getting out of bed on a Sunday.

The trick is to not have them every Sunday, I'll have one about every month and when I do I properly enjoy it because its been a while since I've had one.

That and being selective on where to get one from!

Agreed, I have one about once every 6 weeks/2 months. Then spend a bit more on a really good joint/chicken and it really makes a difference

Nope.

Don't go overboard on the different veg. Use some herbs, but carefully (today's pork for example - sage, rosemary, coriander seeds). Home made Yorkshires are a must. As is gravy made in the roasting pan.

And don't piss about trying to make it low fat/low calorie/low salt/low whatever. You'll be subjecting yourself to bland mediocrity.

I like slow cooked red cabbage in red wine with a splash of apple juice, some cinnamon, apple and sultanas. Also cauliflower cheese, add leeks for a change.

To me a Sunday roast is a proper home cooked affair, that's why they only happen about every month. To do it properly you you need a good joint of meat, the time to cook it right and arsedness to clean up after.

Do it weekly and you start slacking as it becomes a chore!

I include home as being the place where there is an excellent standard of cooking. Some people don't have the luxury to say the same!

As stated above the Sunday roast is a magnificent thing if done at home and with love and care. After sitting through yet another insipid restaurant version today for Mother's Day - at a smart gastropub I was assured by the relative who booked it was good - I am never ordering one in a restaurant again. It's enough to put you off them for good. The flaccid veg, the stty potatoes, the crap frozen yorkshires, the paltry slices of limp meat sitting in disappointing gravy. Bleurgh
