Microwave ovens

Our micro has packed in, total nuisance!

Looking at Amazon I see a massive range, doing everything from nuking to roasting and some placed above your cooker even working as extractor fans!!

I've only ever used them for heating milk for the kids (and my coffe gets reheated 3-4 times since having kids!) reheating foods and so on, but am I missing a trick here? Can combi microwave ovens be useful, or should I buy a cheap basic model and continue with business as usual?

We've got a built in one that is also an oven, grill, etc. similar if not the same to this: http://www.siemens-home.co.uk/our-products/cooking... Mainly got it as it was part of a whole new kitchen and I didn't want a normal microwave cluttering up the worktops.

To be honest its main use is reheating stuff i.e. milk, ready meals, leftovers, stuff we've made and frozen, etc. but a useful feature is to use the oven in combination with the microwave as this is great for doing jacket potatoes in half the time it would take conventionally but still crispy unlike the microwaved variety. I'm sure there are a whole load of other uses it could be put to if we put our minds to it

Our built in gas grill doesn't work properly so we bought a MW with grill, when we change the oven this year we will probably change the MW for something smaller.

Our microwave packed in 18 months ago and we made a conscious decision not to replace it.

Not missed it once.

Heating milk - use a milk pan.
Cooking greens - use a bamboo steamer.
Defrosting stuff - get it out the freezer the day before.
Heating stuff up - use a pan or the oven as it generally does a much better job.

Not for everyone but I would recommend it.

We've got a combi convection oven type one - haven't used it in anything other than basic microwave mode since we bought it.

Thanks, pretty much confirms my initial thought. Get the basic one!

I hear you badger, but that's not an option. To much faffing around really, for very little benefit.
