I'm in NYC quite often with work, less so this year as I have a young daughter. If you're after fine dining I would check out Eleven Madison Park. Never been disappointed. If you need other cheaper options happy to help.

PH collective comes through as usual - really appreciated! 11 Madison looks like the big day favourite. Still interested in anything else. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
For some bar food Americana style I ate often in Bills Bar and Burger on West 51st Street, not far from the Radio City Music Hall. They have a great range of beers and some quality burgers. All bad for you but a wide selection. Seemed to attract a lot of city workers popping in for food on their way home.
Last business trip was for 3 weeks, I think I ate everything on the menu. Ate cheap and pocketed the rest of my daily allowance
If you head "downtown" there are plenty of nice places on Greenwich Street.
HB Burger near Time Square Mid Town is also good, a chain but I was mainly attracted by the selection of beers.
The Counter on Time Square itself is also good, they'll make a burger how ever you want it but very busy given the location.

For Japanese, GyuKaku Times Sq.
High end French, Cherche Midi (near Katz Deli)
Real NY food, Ruby Tuesday (about a block from Times Sq)
ISTR that Eleven had rather long pre-booking times?

You have to book 28 days prior, which I did and got the time and date wanted, how ever I did book through his PA as I have a connection. Respect to them as they would not let me book any earlier, so offered no special treatment.
Quick report - we had to settle for a lunch slot at Eleven MP. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, asparagus cooked in pigs bladder AT THE TABLE was a hi light.
Also had dinner Balthazar on Saturday night. Great atmosphere, food and service.
Happened to be the 13th annual Big Apple BBQ Block Party so we enjoyed proper ribs n beer in Madison park in 85 degree temperatures.
We tried Halal Guys street food on a recommendation from a tour guide. $7 and enough delicious chicken with rice for two.
Overall, fantastic food all weekend regardless of the price!

Jean George was the stand out though, first and only 3* experience we've done.
