Office Food Policy

Today I took a home-made burger to work and cooked it in the George Foreman (which was left by a previous employee when she left 4 years ago). It only took a few moments and was delicious.

Anyway, its been commented that the smell (whilst amazing) isn't appropriate for an office. There is no policy atm, but there is likely to be something in the next day or so.

Previously we've used it to cook bacon etc, and we have a microwave too.

My question is, can they ban you from cooking lunch?

Quick overview of office layout: Kitchen is not vented, opens into main area. No lounge or eating are provided, only at desks.

Pass. I tend to fins alot of these rules are driven by the same tt who microwaves a curry or something. Do as I say not as I do.

I suppose they could take the grill away but then that would make me want to be petty and I'd find ways of stinking the place out on purpose. Mackerel in a garlic sauce anyone?

I'm not sure work places have to provide you a kitchen at all?

I hate nothing more than sitting at my desk trying to work and smelling someone's minging lunch. I'm sure your burger smelt delicious - but someone else might hate it.

At the end of the day it's a work environment, you can bring in cold lunch easily enough, or pop out. Food smells aren't always pleasant and have no place in an open office environment.

Reading between the lines a little and using the powers of assumption did you work through your lunch? If this the case and they want to act up I'd just work to rule. Take an hour for lunch and go off site.

I've already questioned if I could run the George outside on the balcony and cook my burger.

I wish we had one, we've recently employed 3 guys from india and another from sri lanka, smells like a friggin takeaway.

My lodger works in an office where they aren't allowed to heat anything up, not even microwaveable food. Slightly harsh given that it's on an office park in the arse end of nowhere.

We've got a huge kitchen at work
Two dishwashers, full hob and extractor, three micros, flat screen TV
I' don't use it because a lot of the younger ones a tramps, one lad does mackerel and garlic in there

On a construction site the HSE state that a microwave or means of heating food is to be provided....... why should an office be any different ?

As a place of work, ie. it is the office, I would suggest cooking a burger is a step too far. Anything that smells out the workspace for others is not really on. Eating a burger from a van outside at your desk would be a different thing all together. Actually cooking, I'd say no.
