Taking a hike across the south Downs next week and will end up in Lewes, looking for a pub that serves real ale and does decent grub- preferably all day as we're likely to arrive after 2. Any suggestions?

Most of the pubs seam to do Harveys which is the local ale.

For food, from memory (I used to work in Lewes) the Pelham arms was good or the kings head on southover high street.

we used to head up this place as well http://www.abergavennyarms.com which is outside lewes but maybe on route

The snow drop has a decent selection of beers and does late food. I've only eaten there once, it was basic but nice pub food. Only downside is the beer garden is close to the main road so a bit noisy.
Most of the pubs in Lewes have a good selection of ales, though some may not do food later.

A second recommendation for the Snowdrop Inn

Excellent beer, food pretty good too.

I have no connection with the place but meet up with chums there on a regular basis
