Special dinner in London

It's my wife's Birthday and our anniversary coming up. I booked a table at Le Gavroche ages ago for a couple of weeks time. I reckon it will be £450 for dinner for two there.

The question is, can I book anywhere more spectacular/impressive/good with what is now two weeks notice, in London for a Saturday night at a proper time (8pm onwards).

Stick with Le Gavroche. You will find nicer settings and views but the food probably won't be as good and you can always go to the bars in one of those places afterwards. Hilton Park Lane has a nice Cocktail Bar on the top floor a 10 min walk or short cab ride from Le Gavroche.

First dibs on your booking though if you do change your mind.

Had the chefs menu (8 courses) last year and the food is simply amazing! Everything about the experience is, well, fantastic! One downside (unless you have the appetite of a horse) is that there is simply too much food (yikes, I never ever thought I'd say that!). We also chose the wine per course option and although each wine was perfect I had to only take a few sips from some glasses as there seemed to be just too much alcohol. Next time I shall fast before the event! If you stick to the a la carte choices then I think it will be perfect for you both. Especially if you love food, know a little bit about food and have not experienced the high level stuff. Good call for a special event fella. She will love it and is going to be made to feel very special.

To answer your original question, take the plunge and enjoy the evening as planned. My opinion is that there is no better in central London (and you wont get into Ramsey's in Hospital Road for love nor money with that short notice!

It's interesting you mention too much food and wine. My OH and I went to Ramsey's in Hospital Road and had the 7 course menu which was more like 14 courses with all the little additions. We were full halfway through, painfully so by the end. £500 for a meal for two which ended up down the loo earlier than expected. Very tasty but far too much. Stick to the a la carte unless you're a big eater.

The best meal that I have had in my life was the tasting menu at Typing Room in Bethnal Green in June. Very highly recommended!
