I'm a big fan of things with a chilli kick, so I bought a bottle of Bridge Farm chilli cider on sight.

I assumed it would have a bit of a kick, like one I had at a cider festival recently, but it is utterly undrinkable. Like a phal curry in a glass. It doesn't taste of cider at all.

What's the point? Why not make it a bit chilli-ish, and therefore more enjoyable?

Any one else experienced a product with chilli added to it hat has been rendered inedible/undrinkable?

Is it a chef's failing to not be blessed to stop your self overdoing it?

Could not agree more.

The heat from chili should (IMO) be used a seasoning to the main ingredients flavour.

My Dad (bless) thinks its hilarious to offer me chili chocolate at Xmas hoping I get a surprise.

Just adding raw heat to something shows a level of ignorance, used correctly gentle warmth through to real "burn your eyes/ass out" fire can be amazing if with care and attention.

Just because it doesn't suit your own palate doesn't mean nobody else will like it There are probably people out there who think it is quite mild, having had their taste buds de-sensitised over the years by eating extremely hot curries. I have a Vietnamese friend who can happily snack on chillies so hot that they would make grown men cry with just the smell of them.

I do understand that, I knew someone would post something like it. I also have one friend in my whole acquaintance who _may_ have been able to drink this. But that's kind of my point: if only utter maniacs can drink it, that kind of limits the market for something being sold with innocuous labelling in a supermarket.

My contention would be, if you can't taste the cider, why make chilli cider? Why not just chilli water, for all the difference it would make?

Stick to having your chilli and cider fixes separately, rather than as one.

I've got some very interesting chillies in the greenhouse at the moment. They are Chinese lantern shaped chillies, like a habanero, and they smell as if they are going to burn your face off, but they are almost as mild as a sweet pepper. Massively aromatic, no heat. Could probably be used to flavour lots of things without making them hot.

Agreed. I'm a huge chilli fan, but spicy drinks are without exception, total crap. IMO.

With the exception of 'hot' ginger beer... which I utterly adore.

biggrin It was 'hot' ginger beer that I was particularly remembering.

1 pint ruined the whole beer festival. Could not shift it!

Harissa spice coconut cakes are the spiciest thing I've tasted in a long time, I quite like spicy things but these are inedible and make your eyes water yet are meant to be for dessert.

You can buy them from ethnic food shops and are useful if you have a food thieve in the office, leave them in a communal area and quickly find out who it is.

What the fk are they on about? Paragraphs of how dangerous it is and you must not eat it and you must be 18 and sign an agreement and on the same page there is a video of a fat tt eating it.

Had some chilli beer (not lager) at a beer festival a few years ago it was vile, we had one pint which was passed round 8 of us, and not one of us liked it....... it did however become the forfeit for failure to comply with silly drinking games rules hehe
