Have a large jar of cherries in some type of syrup hiding in the fridge.

Opened them a good few months ago, I was under the impression they are nigh on impossible to spoil, or at least I thought so from the fact my parents would keep a small jar in the cocktail cabinet and it lasted years... until I ate them all.

When I just opened it now I can hear it fizzing away.

Im assuming this is bad and should be destroyed now, can't find anything about it online and not really wanting to do a taste test on them to see if they are fine.

PS. Can I have your watch after you're gone?

Was wondering when you would show up saying that... Still as used and as good as the day I got it.

Different foods go off in different ways, partly depending on what's in them.
The fizziness is the result of gas produced by certain foods when they go off - other foods become stale or discoloured.
Some foods contain small amounts of certain bacteria or yeasts that produce gases such as carbon dioxide or hydrogen over time.

Is the liquid just fermenting? Lots of sugar might turn into alcohol and CO2?
