For Christmas last year, I was given a voucher for a day at a cookery school. I had put off arranging it until the last moment (voucher only valid for a year) as I felt it would have been a waste of a day.
I went last weekend and what a revelation. It was brilliant. Best day out I've had for a while.
It was a 'mens day', bunch of about 20 guys with varying levels of interest in cooking, demo by a decent chef then supervised preparation of a 3 course meal, then eat the meal with the group then followed by a whisky tasting in the afternoon.
I've already looked up their website and looking to book at least 2 or 3 days for next year. Anyone else had any experience of this type of thing?

I went to the Weber academy with the same thought and came back after one fantastic experience.

To be honest, the whisky tasting was the only 'average' part of the day. A representative of Glenfiddich lined us up a 12 year old, a 14 year old, a 15 year old , an 18 year old and a 21 year old (all Glenfiddich)and talked us through them for an hour then passed us what was left of the bottles to finish off. It was ok, but the cookery was a far more interesting and enjoyable experience.

My wife got me a Knife skills course from http://www.inspiredgourmet.co.uk/ - was really impressed. Cooked a 3 course meal, each course focussing on a different knife technique.
Food was great and the Chef was a great teacher. I'm tempted to book myself on a couple more courses next year.

I did a day with these guys in Barcelona: http://www.cookandtaste.net/

It was ace. Fun way to see a bit of the city and we all got suitably lubricated while learning the intricacies of Catalan cooking.

Haven't been to one myself but a friend went to the Daylesford Organics one and had a great time. Thinking of doing it myself on her recommendation.

Done a few
Rick Stein one at his school in Padstow which was excellent, no sign of Rick all day though.
A meat one at Newlyns farm school where I learned some butchery skills and meat prep and cooking. Again excellent.
And finally I did a morning with Tom Kerridge at the Hand and Flowers. We covered everything from prep with all the assistant chefs through to working the pass with Tom. That was a real insight into how a pro kitchen works.

Ask your most local high end restaurant if you can do a couple of shifts or "stagiere" there to learn some skills and then offer them money for the privilege. That's exactly what Noma in Denmark do.
