Hi all

I'm looking for a gift for my brother for Christmas, he loves Jack Daniels and makers mark but hates Whiskey. I'm looking for a bottle that might be a little more unusual / special budget maybe £40-60 ish. I've researched online but it's very hard to comprehend what might be a decent comparison. Anyone have experience in this area who can advise me?

Many thanks in advance and I hope all have a great Christmas.

Woodford Reserve will probably fit the bill.

Thanks for the reply. Any pointers which one? Just looked online and it would seem a few variations of it exist

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blantons-Original-Single-B...

Blanton's is my favorite, looks like it fits the bill.

Just regular Woodford Reserve. Other good options would be Buffalo Trace, or (if it's in your price range, not sure what the UK prices are like) Bookers, Blantons, or Noah's Mill.

Woodford Reserve and Maker's Mark I think are the best easily available ones from the high street. Most big supermarkets will have them.

Mail order, look for Blantons Original, Eagle Rare 10, Michters Small Batch (or Straight Rye). All should be within budget.

Bulleit is not 'special' but I rather like it.

IMO woodford is poor taste wise.

We had it at work but everyone preferred buillet so we stopped selling it.

Even though makers mark is supposed to be the premium upsell, buillett still wins.

Buillet is great, and the rye version is that little bit more special - a safe bet

Thanks for the replys so far all. I'm stuck now! Think I might get him a couple of bottles. My local store has Blantons, bulliet and Woodford so I'm thinking of getting two of those 3 now.

I would get the Bulliet and one of the others for a decent spread of taste.

Neither will taste like JD by the way!
hehe

Buffalo Trace or Woodford Reserve.

Buffalo Trace is £17 a bottle at Waitrose at the moment.

If you want to splash out and spend a bit I'd really recommend Eagle Rare that you can get from Amazon. It's £35 a bottle though.

If he likes Makers Mark then i'd suggest getting something on the Wheat side of bourbon like a WL Weller or pappy van winkle. Bourbons like Bulleit and Buffalo trace have a higher rye content and so will have spicier notes.

I'd avoid the bog standard jack, some of the other lines are ok like gentleman jack or single barrel but none of it is bourbon and its style over substance imo.
