New year, new start etc...

As one of my main hobbies is homebrewing, this is a difficult one! I'm nowhere near classed as an excessive drinker, but after a hard day at work there's nothing finer than settling down in the leather recliner with a nice pint of ale or glass of wine that I've brewed before hitting the hay.

I never drink coffee during the day, but enjoy a nice cup of tea. Each time my good lady was pregnant and I was on red alert, I'd switch the pint of homebrew for a cup of tea, but couldn't sleep - I used to think it was an old wives tale that there was more caffeine in tea than coffee (especially the way I like it - leave the bag soaking for a good 5 mins, no sugar, n just a dash of milk).

I hate Horlicks and Ovaltine, and milk in general really (aside from the afore mentioned splash in a cup of tea).

What do you other powerfully-built businessmen drink when you're abstaining?

Sparkling water, Green Tea, Mint Tea (great after a meal) Fresca if it's got to be pop, or a cup of tea. Tea does have less caffeine than coffee BTW; pound for pound tea leaves have more but a brewed cup has 1/2 to 1/3 of the caffeine.

As you like milk, how about hot chocolate made with milk? Good quality chocolate is much nicer than the cheap stuff. Conversely, I really quite like instant lemon tea for a late night drink, and I doubt that's ever seen a real lemon.

The boss sups green tea, and I hate the stuff... frown

I used to enjoy warm Vimto, but went off it after I switched to the sugar-free version, and hitting the sugar' version would prob have more calories than me homebrew, so maybe missing the point? Ditto Robinson's lemon barley water,

Heck, I'm sure my elderflower wine is a health drink!

I mainly drink just plain old water.

Occasionally I'll have a coffee or fruit juice, had a glass of cranberry juice earlier.

A pint of beer and a pint of coca-cola have about the same amount of calories in them, depending on how strong you brew it, and that's about the same for any soft drink. I was surprised too.

I try and avoid drinking late in the evening, but if I am having something, I'd quite often have Fentiman's ginger beer:

Of course you could do your own if you fancy it.

I also enjoy San Pellegrino lemonade.

Shame you don't like cow-juice as I was going to suggest a spice chai. As you like the process of making your own then you could experiment with spice mixes.

Ginger beer, sugar free if you want or get a good cordial and mix it with fizzy water. I found it gives you the same hit at the back of your mouth as beer so helps with the craving.

Is bitters allowed? You only use a small amount.

Then you can look up massively altering the normal soda flavours.

one of my favourites at the moment is cola and a few drops of orange bitters.

However my favourite drink so far that I want to find a natural way of doing it, is pink grapefruit squash, if I can find anything that is similar I would be hooked.

Pink/normal it doesnt really matter that much, just add lots of ice and then sparkling/non sparking water and Im happy.

Fresh fruit juice for me, anything from the tropical mixes to orange, apple or whatever. I find Cranberry hard to drink as it's thin and insipid so mix it with orange, it's then like pink grapefruit!

I don't mind fruit juice, however its loaded with sugars, even though they are normal and we need some sugars, having an orange is good, drinking 250ml of orange juice (6+ oranges) is bad and so I tend to stay away.

Have a try on Cranberry juice. I drink it on my 2 days a week that I abstain from beer and wine. Ocean spray seems much better than supermarket home brands.

I don't drink a lot of alcohol - I can often go weeks without a drop.

At home, I drink:

Coffee (we used to use a percolator, but now solely drink espresso using a Moka pot). I usually have 3 small cups per day.
Cranberry juice - Ocean Spray. Also Cranberry/Rasberry, Cranberry/Blueberry. Usually a litre per day. Very refreshing.
Ginger Beer - I prefer Fever Tree, usually on offer for £2.40 for 4 bottles.
Water.
