I know absolutely nothing about Whisky and last year you managed to help me, so I'm
Asking again :-)

I would like two presents for different people who know each other. They both like Macallan (12 years old I think?) and are American. So I would like one, preferably two, whiskys that have the essence of MacAllan but are a bit different.

Any suggestions and thanks for your help?

My old man, who never buys anything other than Macallan, took a shine to Glenrothes last time he stayed with me

Macallan is pretty neutral but heavily sherried. You're basically paying for the name, they are very big in export markets. Glenrothes is a good shout, or Glanfarclas?

I'll put Cardhu into the mix. Excellent Speyside, not peaty, smooth and faintly sweet.

And the bottle is cool too wink

I love the Macallan, others I really like are Craggamnore, Balvenie Double Wood, and Bunnahabhain.

All in a similar taste, well they are to my basic palate.

You might want to post on the Show us your Whiskey thread, will probably get more people responding.

The king of sherried whiskey (like The Macallan) is Glendronach - look for one matured in sherry casks, don't get one that's been in port casks. I don't think they sell a bad one but the older malts can be quite sweet. Also look at The Balvenie - very nice and the cheaper ones can be had in Sainsbury's. The first fill bourbon cask 12 year old is a fantastic summer whiskey - very light with vanilla and honey tones.

If you want to try something slightly off beat then Kavalan from Taiwan is really very nice. There is a Kavalan no age statement in Waitrose for £40 a bottle which beats many Scottish whiskies. Kavalan also won best whiskey in the world last year with a more expensive whiskey and that was exceptionally nice.

Look for Speyside malts, in fact one to try would be https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/benriach-16-... which won an award also last year and is very nice if a little basic.

Or try The Macallan fine oak with the light blue label, that is a very pleasant and tasty whiskey.

The black bottle Penderyn is pretty 'easy' drinking and madeira finished (rather than sherry) but still a nice smooth sweet finish.

I took a bottle to a recent meeting of our Mountaineering club and it went down very well, with most people being surprised how good it was (and how easy to drink). Made for an interesting committee meeting...

Macallan is a very good Speyside, sherry casked single malt. Echo the above about balvenie, either the doublewood or the signature, not the rum casked one. Glenrothes stuff is absolutely superb. Glendronach is one of the finest sherried speysides out there, at just about any age. I'm a massive fan of Singleton which is pretty similar again, but just go for the standard Singleton and not one of the special edition ones. Mortlach is another sherried speyside whisky and is also absolutely lovely. I do like cardhu and tamdhu but the ones above have a bit more flavour going for them.

If they like macallan in particular, don't get them anything aged in bourbon casks - it's a different taste. A very pleasant taste, but not the same at all.
