What is the difference between quick cook pasta and the normal dried pasta you can pick up from the shelves of any good local supermarket.

Aside from the difference of cooking time of course.

I had some "quick cook" spaghetti last night and it was rank. Tasted like an awful noodle.

Does it not just have ridges in it so it cooks quicker as it's not as thick?

It's already part-cooked (steamed) before they package it or it's made in a way which means it's more porous so it absorbs water more quickly.

So, does this fit in between the supermarket 'fresh' stuff and the 'dried' ?
It takes 2-3minutes for fresh and 7-10 for dried.
How long for this quick cook? How little time must someone have that they need quick cook pasta.

I don't really know. It is totally dry. And let me tell you if you don't read that packet (as most wouldn't for cooking pasta) you can really ruin a 3 minute quick cook pasta in 9 minutes.

Think it's a similar concept i.e. it's been part cooked and then dried again.

Either way I avoid both easy cook pasta and rice. Anyway just how precious is someone's time, it only take 10 - 12 minutes to cook normal dried pasta and similar for rice? The quick cook stuff is only a few minutes less and it doesn't taste as nice IMO.

It tastes vile

Merely an accidental purchase.

I'm surprised people buy these 'easy' and 'quick' cook varieties as they are often nasty. Fresh pasta can be bought almost anywhere these days, stays fresh in the fridge for quite some time and is cooked in 2-3 minutes.
