Looking for some help....

I moved over to the USA 5 years ago, so have been out of touch with nice places to eat for lunch in this area. Whenever I am back for a fleeting visit, the old country pubs are either boarded up or now elegant houses.

I am coming back for a quick weekend at the end of April, staying in the Basingstoke, Newbury area. The plan is to take my parents, my brother and his daughter out for a treat of a country pub lunch... Something we cannot get over here.

My Parents live out towards Devizes, so a meet up in the Hanmpshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire area would be ideal.
There are a few that spring to mind and Internet searches are all so similar.

It doesn't need to be cheap.. Or a 3 star Michelin rated. Either would be fine.
We will be celebrating 3 birthdays around this time, so it's a little special.

The pub recommendation threads do not seem to be loading smile

Over to you. MTIA

The Halfway Inn?

It's on the A4 halfway between Hungerford and Newbury, you cant miss it! Great pub food and atmosphere. Stop there occasionally when it's a nice evening and I'm out for a ride.

We go here far too much, it’s the best country pub around in my opinion:

http://www.thebunkinn.co.uk/ Does good food, and has a traditional pub feel in the bar area. (just outside of Newbury)

http://www.potkiln.org/ is meant to be excellent food, sadly not made it there yet.

The Pot Kiln is great.
The Purefoy Arms is good.

Another choice is The Yew Tree Inn, Lower Weild.

http://www.the-yewtree.org.uk/

South of Basingstoke not all that far from the Purefoy Arms.

It's in our village and has a great reputation, pretty busy at weekends though.

We go there quite regularly - but its nicest on a warm summers evening when you can sit outside and have a drink looking across at the field/woods on the other side.

Went here the other day for the first time (as part of our regular "sunday walk and pub lunch" hobby) and really liked it:

Fancy - http://www.theharrowatlittlebedwyn.com/menu/

More pub-like (and great real ale) - http://www.kingsarmsallcannings.co.uk/menus

Both favourites whenever we're down visiting family & friends in Wilts.

My parents live in Winchester and we often go there; it's not bad but can't see what all the fuss is about myself. Decent enough food but find the pub a bit dark and dingy.

I'd suggest The Bush near Alresford, quite out of the way and great location next to the River Itchen. Great food and feels special.

The The Plough Inn in Sparsholt just outside of Winchester is another good one.

Went here recently.

I'm not a regular diner in places like this. It was fabulous.

Very special (and priced accordingly): http://www.thewellingtonarms.com/ - in Baughurst/Tadley (not to be confused with Wellington Arms on A33)

Good gastropub on the Kennet/Avon canal at Woolhampton on the A4 East of Newbury http://www.brunningandprice.co.uk/rowbarge/
