Is it possible to bake a sweet potato in a steamer or will it just end up a soggy mess or undercooked?

I think the clue is in your post. You steam in a steamer. Not bake which you do in an oven

True. I've got one of those steamers with different compartments so was wondering if I could cook a full meal including sweet potato.

It has different compartments to steam though if its a steamer. Have you got an oven? Whack it on 180 deg wrap the sweet potatoes in foil and bake for an hour if you have. Then split them and scoop the potatoe out. Best mash i think

Yeah, the whole idea with baking is to get a crispy exterior with a soft interior. You won't get that with a steamer.
