I have been in France for the last couple of weeks and was telling my daughter how good the French Frites would be as I remember them being very different to the UK ones.

Something has changed as they really weren't special at all. I remember that they used to use a different oil or something
and were very nice, now everywhere is just serving up tasteless boring chips.

Anyone know why?

Which part of France? I've always found that a simple plate of steak/moules frites was always better over the border in Belgium. Damn you've made me hungry now.

The Belgians used to cook theirs in horse fat (or a mix of that and other stuff). I suspect the French will also have used animal based products and maybe are succumbing to the salad eating types finally smile

Probably the biggest change, depending on how far back you're "remembering", is that you can get half decent fries everywhere now. So they won't seem so "special".

Definitely not the same, their frites were excellent 20 years ago. They were always cooked a very light colour.

One of life's mystery's I think.
