My 4 year old (cheap-ish) grundig stand mixer has packed up, need a proper solid mixer that can cope with regular dough kneeding. Once or twice a week I suppose.

Looking at kitchenaid but from what I can tell it's a 2 year warranty which seems a bit st for a £400 mixer!

Could buy cheap again and just replace when it goes pop. But like the idea of getting something that'll last a long time.

Are the kitchen aid jobbies that good or just paying for the "retro" look?

Ta!

I'm sure I read somewhere that the Kenwood Chef has a much more powerful motor than a Kitchenaid.

Hello mate, I just bought a Kitchenaid Artisan mixer and the warranty is 5 years.

Model number is KSM150 and it's available in a billion colours. I went for cast iron black.

Hope this helps.

Warranty is best from Costco.

Return it as long as you are a member. Apart from TV's.

Not so sure about the Kenwood but kitchenaid use a plastic drive component that will eventually shear if heavily used. Its not a big job to replace but it is fiddly. I had to do mine twice over 3 years being used to mix dough every other day.

I like ours. 2 years old and had one fault (5 year John Lewis warranty at the time) - burned out motor (I think).

Go for the glass bowl as well.

myKitchenAid was replaced twice under warranty then flogged on ebay. ended up with a Vitamix which I hate - wish I'd just not messed around and got a blendtec...

I think the OP is talking about mixers rather than blenders?

Or get a kenwood major as the bowls are huge. Which is useful.

There's a reason why you often find a KA mixer in professional restaurant kitchens.

If you're worried about the wear on the Artisan range, have a look at the Heavy Duty range.

Just out of interest, why?

Ours is used a lot and hasn't had an issue yet, lots of dough mixing etc. must be 5 years old. Only thing is I can never quite get that turn screw adjusted correctly that stops it knocking up a quarter of an inch when kneading heavy dough.

Gives you good visibility to the mix and any remaining ingredients at the bottom of the bowl. It has a lovely weight about it and I use it as a normal mixing bowl as well.

Hi All,

Thank you very much for the responses! Lots of useful info.

I've done some more digging around, GBBO replaced all their KA mixers with Kenwood KMIX... which apparently caused a bit of a stir! (no pun intended)

The KA's are the "gold standard" for all home bakers apparently, but from reading more the KMIX is a better machine. (500w motor v 325 for a start, which when dealing with bread dough will make a big difference in longevity of the motor).

I'm liking the look of the KMIX now actually.

I did have a Kenwood and the motor was strong, but the gearbox was rubbish and for mostly bread making it shredded the box in about 24 months. It may have been a one-off.

You get a free glass bowl by redemption for the next week or 2, too!

Top drama over at GBBO then! smile

The Internet whining over the swap was quite funny.
