Afternoon all,

I trying to get stuff in order as we head towards the festive period and the in laws enjoy a lot of cheese and lot of red wine, neither of which I like and have any idea about.

Is it possible to get a good bottle of red and some cheese for the £50 region and what would you recommend? Last year I walked into Sainsbury’s and purchased whatever fit within the budget, and they liked it, however I am sure I could have got better with some prep!

Thanks,

Dan

Bottle of Hock, slab of cheddar, or red Leicester if you're feeling decadent. Go to the pub with the change.

I'd rather have port than red wine with a cheese board.

Im no wine guy, but from what i read, a 5 quid bottle can be every bit as good as a 5000 quid bottle, price apparently isnt linked to quality very tightly.

Maybe stop by an actual wine/liquor store and ask the clerk for recommendations?

This. They'll even do tastings (if they are any good).

Theres a wine shop near by that I could pop too and then pop into the tesco next door for cheese with the change I suppose!

We used to use a wine mercnant in Shipston on Stour. Average price paid for a good bottle was £10. You don't have to spend a fortune. If you insist on Tesco/Sainsbury (for red wine) then look for a +/- £10 bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from their 'finest' range. You won't go far wrong. It's a full bodied wine that always goes well with a decent cheddar cheese.

Unless you are buying your own body weight in cheese then yes.

2 or 3 good hard cheeses, say £15
For £30 you will get 2 nice bottles of red

Ask them?

You might only need £6 if they like value cheddar and a bottle of Lidl Shiraz.

£50 will get you a good few bottles of decent red and a very decent bit of cheese.

If you are in any doubt though:

Will have the answers.

And just down the road from Paxton & Whitfield in Jermyn St. there is Berry Bros & Rudd wine merchants on St. James Street.
On your way from one to the other you will have the opportunity to pick up the Christmas cigars in one of two cigar merchants (Davidoff, James J Fox) with a third shop (Dunhill) just a bit further down.

All the important details in one simple journey. biggrin

Don't be afraid of the BBR Good Ordinary Claret at £9 / bottle (£19 for a magnum). It's very nice as a rule.

For Xmas and New Year we always have Epoisses. Available from Waitrose or Sainsbury. When we buy it, we keep it in the garage beforehand, it absolutely stinks but tastes wonderful (as far as we are concerned). My 12 year old loves it aswell, but it smells worse than his socks :-)

I'd have to add manchego and Somerset brie.

And something smoked over oak! (Leads nicely into the wisky course of the meal)

I would be asking those who have to drink and eat it what they like.

If you are not already sorted OP , then this may be of use:

https://www.thewinesociety.com/Shop/FoodMatching.a...

Whilst not all the wines will be available on the high street at large, it does point in the right direction for styles of wine matching the relevant cheeses.

Get one of these (Tete de Moine).. Lovely cheese (Waitrose sell it.. think Aldi etc do a cheapo version) and the wheel is clever too. Great at Christmas.

Class lurking 93.

Mind you... first post - £6.75 when you have £50 to spend?

Must try harder.

We use The Fine Cheese Company. Order online, well packed and quick delivery at reasonable prices.

If local enough and they're into all things Italian, Mercato Metropolitano [sp?] has recently opened on Newington Causeway - plenty of cheeses and wines in one stop.
