Surprising the Mrs with a trip to Edinburgh in january.

Looking for somewhere nice to book for an evening meal. something mid ranged ideally price wise and somewhere with a bit of atmosphere.

Any suggestions?

I really like Under the stairs, a quirky wee restaurant/bar just down from Greyfriars. Very good veggie stuff if you're that way inclined but pretty good on everything else too.

You need to let them know in advance if arriving by helicopter though :/

Not been myself but Kitchin down in Leith is meant to be good.

Ondine on George IV Bridge is good if you like fish and seafood.

I wouldn't class the Witchery or The Kitchin as mid range laugh.

Vittoria's, there's a couple in town but they're owned by a local italian family. Decent italian food and steaks.

Sushiya, great little sushi bar in Haymarket. It's properly tiny so it can get hard to get a seat at weekends.

El Cartel Mexicana, really good mexican food and cocktails.

Bon vivant, bistro food and cocktail bar. Again there are a couple in town.

Bodega, tiny little taco place. Again get's rammed at the weekend was byob the last time I was there.

I haven't lived in edinburgh for a year but these were all personal favourites.

Kitchin is good, but a little bit out the way.. Witchery and Norn would get my vote - although i have to admit, i haven't been to Norn, i've just heard good things.

Eaten at the Witchery before several years ago, and didn't think it lived up to the reputation.

Really impressed by Montieths on Royal Mile when I ate there about 3 years ago. Mid priced, excellent food and service.

New town - The Rosehip on Rose St

Old town - The Broadsheet at the High Court

Atmosphere? They're both fairly quiet though.

Ate at Rhubarb at Prestonfield a few years ago. Atomospheric to say the least, it is a cab ride away though.

Maison Bleue on Victoria Street might fit the bill, and would be worth considering.

It might not push boundaries with what it does, but normally very well done, in a building that is atmospheric in its own right.. I've been there quite a few times and never been disappointed.

Some good suggestions above.
Also:

l’escargot bleu
Aizle
Kanpai Sushi
Passorn Thai

Scran and Scallie is lovely but sometimes hard to get a booking and a bit out of the way if you're staying in the Old Town.

Note El Cartel doesn't take bookings so wouldn't pin hopes on dinner there.
Lunch is a better option.

Bread meats bread does meh burgers. 'Burger' or the The Cambridge Bar are superior.
