Any decent ones out there?

I normally start the day with a pot of strong of black coffee. I thought I may try decaf, Waitrose and Sainsbury's are the most convenient supermarkets.

Recommendations gratefully received.

Personally and I'm sure there is nothing to worry about but I'd rather not drink coffee that was soaked in paint stripper for 10 hours to remove the caffeine.

Is that how they make it? What happens to the waste product, caffeinated paint stripper would have a good kick to it for the morning hehe

'Swiss Water method' is what you need to look for, but probably not in supermarkets (or even instant?).

Does this mean you're going caffeine teetotal or is it just the first hit you're missing?
What type of coffee maker do you use?

I do 50/50 decaff & caff in a cafetiere. My current preference is for Lavazza decaff (which is quite fine, really for filter machine)/Waitrose monsoon Malabar smile

Jet

It's a good marketing ploy is decaff! I've never really noticed a difference when I've come off it.

How about a strong cup of tea instead!?

I'm using a filter machine, waitrose coffee. I generally only drink coffee 1st thing, with an occasionally expresso later in the day.

I do suffer a bit of AM anxiety, thought I'd try decaff.

Aldi's ground decaf is no different to their normal coffee, in my opinion!

I like the Milicano stuff. Im not a coffee connoisseur so not really fussed, I had to knock off full fat coffee due to headaches.

Likewise. Both taste the same we used it to water down the full fat when the other half was pregnant.

I made a switch about two years ago and found it hard to find one that really had any flavour.

There are a few ways decaff coffee is made and I always tried to go for the decaff that didn't use solvents - I'm just not keen on that idea. The best one I came across after trying many was Taylors which is available almost anywhere.

I find that it's the 'pot' of coffee that's the issue. If I have a cafetière, I find that the effects of the caffeine are more marked than when I make an espresso based drink.

While espresso has a greater caffeine per unit volume than drip or cafetière coffee, the volume of coffee in the resulting drink means an espresso based drink has an overall lower caffeine content

I think most generally available decafs use swiss water method these days.

Unless it's decaf espresso they tend to be medium roasted medium everything really. If you want the best taste possible I would go for the beans, grind immediately before using, filter coffee and perhaps use slightly more than you would normally just to give it more taste. Careful on this last point as you don't want it noticeably strong just flavoursome

Bit of a thread resurrection - I'm wondering which ground decaf to go for to use in a Gaggia Titanium machine. I tried a Lavazza one in the past but it was so finely ground that it clogged the brew unit in the machine really quickly. I'm not going caffeine teetotal - just wanting something I can have later in the day. I'll be sticking to my usual kick on a morning!

Is their normal coffee any good? If so that could be my answer.
