Recommend me a Whisky for £40

My current favourite Whiskys are Ardbeg 10 year & Lidl Glen Alba 22 Year Sherry Cask. I already have a couple of other Islays and I fancy adding something different to my current stock.

Can someone please recommend a Speyside/Highland/Lowland or Irish whisky for about £40?

I was given a bottle of this just before Christmas. It had an interesting mix of flavours but was one of the harshest whiskies I've ever tasted, I had to add water to finish the glass, something I very seldom do. Since then I've offered it to 3 other whisky drinkers who thought the same as I did. The bottle is back in the drinks cabinet waiting for a drunken night where I can pass it on to someone too drunk to notice..

Thanks for the great suggestions - Bottle of Cardhu ordered from Amazon (which seems to be the cheapest place to by Whisky) - it should arrive tomorrow.

Ready for next time, I sampled some Glen Scotia over Christmas which is an Islay and was rather nice I thought.

Got a bottle waiting to come out to me as payment for helping a friend with a fireworks show. Hopefully he hasn't drunk it by now.

I'm an Islay addict, but on a recent trip to the Motherland I discovered Glengoyne in several of its varieties. Great discovery.

I would go with Aberlour a'bunadh, incredible whisky for the price. Quite often see it down to £35 in Waitrose.

Out of interest, what is the optimum price point for whiskey? Do you start getting into diminishing returns higher up? Or just get what you can afford?
