I've loved the stuff since childhood. I used to take a jar to school on occasion, instead of sweets.
Today, I've finished a jar and it triggered a memory...
You used to be able to get your knife and scrape around under the rim and retrieve, perhaps another couple of slices of toast's worth.
Not so anymore.
Is it runnier than it used to be? Perhaps a little bit more water added to gain a little bit more profit?
Also, I'm not sure if it used to be a little bit stronger. Maybe my taste buds are wearing out like the rest of me.

I am sure that many years ago it used to be darker in colour.

I think it may be the shape of the jar. I do wonder about the taste strength though because I use more than I used too - greed?

The limited edition Marmite XO tasted like how I remember Marmite to be. The modern stuff doesn't taste the same.

But, as you say, perhaps the tastebuds dull with time.

Yes. Definitely.

I have marmite quite often, had some tonight - it's runnier and has lost some punch too.

Tesco own brand Yeast Extract is thicker, more substantial, blacker, and tastier. It's how marmite used to be. The branded stuff now is a pale imitation.

That's worth knowing. Thanks! thumbup

I wish Marmite would bring back XO though. That stuff was the real deal.

Can't comment on Marmite as I rarely eat it but Bovril, which is basically the same but with meat instead veg, suddenly became runnier (is that a word??) a while back, about a year ago from memory. Wouldn't be surprised if Marmite has gone the same way

I have eaten the black nectar on my toast almost every day for 30 years and haven't noticed a change.

Because you will no longer have taste buds left.

Foul stuff.

I love my 5yr old son dearly but have thought of disowning the little horror for liking this, especially when he did what can only be described as a Dirty Sanchez with it (with his finger, before anyone reports me!). His mum has much to answer for.

If that were the case then it would taste progressively weaker.

In your opinion.

Marmite's advertising slogan is, after all, "Love it or hate it". I don't really see what you are adding to the conversation by stating that you are one of those people who hate it.

About as much as you are moaning about my lack of contribution...but if you want me to stay on topic - "has marmite changed?". No, it still tastes foul. In my opinion.

Does that suit your mood better? smile

IIRC, marmite was made runnier a few years ago when a squeeze-able plastic container was introduced. I also think the salt content has been reduced.

If you want thick switch to Vegemite. Watered down it can be used as a substitute for bitumen.

Global warming, you mean?

Sounds plausible but surely we'd have heard about it by now from Geldof or Bonio?

My Marmite cabinet keeps the elixir at a constant temperature.
