So a good friend is starting to get into smoking / bbq'ing and I would like to get him a book on either. Ideally something that explains the concepts and contains recipes etc

What is the best book to get?

This is excellent, if he's into the science of cooking it's perfect.

To give you an idea the book is based on this site http://amazingribs.com/

Another vote for Meathead! Only annoying thing is it's so American that all the measurements are in cups.

Comes with the territory I suppose!

True, don't get 225f and 225c confused, might ruin your pulled pork!

It's a good point. I've resorted to writing teaspoon/tablespoons next to the recipes in pencil. Although to be fair buying a set of American cups is pretty straightforward.

It would rather!

I can deal with Fahrenheit but I really hate measuring stuff in cups. To be honest the real issue is I hate measuring stuff by volume when it's avoidable. Especially when making up BBQ sauce and you're measuring out sticky stuff and then trying to get it out of the measuring cups. Aaargh. Mess and waste. Just tell me the weight and I'll put a bowl on my scales and tip stuff in smile
